Don't miss what the critics have been raving about!
When Superheroes, live theater and tap dancing collide, the
result is Chicago Tap Theatre's The Hourglass and the
Poisoned Pen. Part story ballet, part summer blockbuster
and all rhythm, this is the production that set Chicago on
fire. The show was created with the assistance of famed
comic book artist and writer Andrew Pepoy (Batman, Fables,
Simpsons). With a cast of ten male and female dancers, all
of whom excel in both tap and other forms of dance, and
moments of intense action, irresistible humor and heartfelt
emotion, choreographer and director Mark Yonally not only
creates a whole new world for The Hourglass through his
choreography – he also creates a unique new spin on the art
of tap dance.
What Chicago critics said about the Hourglass and the
Poisoned Pen:
"choreographer Mark Yonally slam-dunks his most recent
fusion of comic books and tap dance... Yonally's Poisoned
Pen is malice incarnate, for example, in a solo whose
forceful contrapuntal dancing brings home his power and
intelligence. Fluffy yet smart, the piece lets you kick
back without going brain-dead." Laura Molzahn, Chicago
Reader, July 4-10, 2008
"A Marvel…spunky and fresh." Sid Smith, Chicago Tribune,
July 2, 2008
"You will be treated to murder, hostage-taking,
vengeance-seeking and knock-down, drag-out fighting along
the way. Each of [Chicago Tap Theatre's] dancers is a
stylish tapper deft at playing a role. And Yonally's
inventive choreography never fails to make tap a great deal
more than simple telegraphy." Hedy Weiss, Chicago
Sun-Times, July 8, 2008
"Wonder Woman. Batwoman. The Bionic Woman. Buffy Summers.
Elastigirl. Juliette Lewis. Isis. Lavagirl. She-Ra.
Face it, chick superheroines rock. And so do tap dancers.
So when I had a free evening on this most recent holiday
weekend, I searched the entertainment listings for a show
that might satisfy both my fetishes. And suddenly, as if
Chicago Tap Theater had read my mind, I saw an ad for The
Hourglass and the Poisoned Pen – the all new Superhero Tap
Dance Opera currently playing at the Athenaeum Theater. I
gathered up my credit card and the Mrs. and made my way to
the next showing.
What is a superhero tap dance opera you ask? Well, just
enough background and plot lines are flashed on the
background of the set so you can read along as you would a
comic book. But instead of looking at drawings similar to
those that filled the notebook of that fat kid you knew in
junior high, you had some bad-ass tap dancers bringing the
action to life.
You see, sweet Elizabeth loved working in her father's
clock and watch shop until he was killed during a brutal
robbery, at which time she received the special power to
slow down time. With the encouragement of Daphne, her wacky
friend and comic book store proprietor, she decided she
needed to fulfill the obligation to use her powers for good
over the evil lurking in her town. Elizabeth, after
receiving a gift from Daphne containing her superheroine
costume of a blue suit, fishnets and yellow tapdancing
go-go boots, transforms into The Hourglass, while Daphne
captured my heart with her transformation into The
Secondhand and her Chuck Taylor tapshoes. Does it get any
cooler than that? Hell no.
The rest of the evening was a series of tap dance scenes
covering everything from tap dancing muggers to tap dancing
street fights to tap dancing workplace skullduggery and
general tap vigilante justice.
So if you're in Chicago, check it out. If not, I feel bad.
As for me, I'll be super-glueing some taps on my own Chuck
Taylors and filling out my application for the Justice Legs
of America."

TAPE
Genre: Drama
Written by STEPHEN BELBER | Directed by JEFF BRELVI
Jon, an aspiring filmmaker on the verge of hitting it big,
hooks up for the weekend with his best friend
from high school, Vince, a volunteer fireman who makes his
money selling dope. Jon's new film is
being shown at a festival in Lansing, Michigan, and Vince
has come from Oakland to see it. Over
the course of the evening, Vince finally gets Jon to admit
that ten years ago he date-raped Amy
Randall, a girl whom they both dated in high school—only
then to reveal that he's taped their entire
conversation. And not only that, he's invited Amy to have
dinner with them that night. Beneath its
sus-penseful, high-stakes surface, TAPE examines questions
of motive, memory, truth and perception. Tape enjoyed a
successful run at the Jose Quintero Theater and is also a
popular cult film starring Ethan
Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard and Uma Thurman.

Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke makes a rare appearance in New York City to promote his latest documentary, "The Wonder Kids" in NYC
PRESS RELEASE:
"Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke makes a rare appearance in New York City to promote his latest documentary, "The Wonder Kids" screening as part of The New York International Independent Film & Video Festival "
****
"Remarkable" - Army Archerd (Variety)
New York NY [September 9, 2008 ]-- The New York International Independent Film and Video Festival is very pleased to announce that legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke will make a special appearance at the "The Wonder Kids" East Coast Premiere, which will be held on Friday September 19th at 8pm at Village East cinema (181 2nd Ave. and 12th Street). Mr. Van Dyke narrated the documentary which scooped the prestigious Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the NYIIFVF in LA. The legendary performer is expected to be joined in a pre-show dance with Savion Glover, and an All-Star cast of dancers featured in the film.
Written, produced and directed by Jim Petersen and Pamela J. Richardson, "The Wonder Kids" is the inspiring story of a tiny dance studio that set out to save the art-form of tap-dancing, and not only produced many of the world's greatest dancers, but saved the lives of thousands of inner-city kids in the process.
Dick Van Dyke, who will be making a rare New York appearance to promote the new film, will also appear that same day as a guest on the hit TV talk show "The View," where he will be discussing the story of "The Wonder Kids," his experience making it, as well as various clips from the film.
NYIIFVF Founder/Executive Stuart Alson commented, "We are absolutely thrilled and honored that Dick Van Dyke will be attending our festival. Mr. Van Dyke did an amazing job in terms of hosting "The Wonder Kids" and in lending his support to promote the film on both coasts. Alson went on to say "I am also very impressed with filmmakers Jim Petersen and Pamela Richardson. Their creativity, passion and ability to craft a very compelling story has resulted in a brilliant docmentary."
Not only were the filmmakers fortunate enough to have a true American icon tell their story, they got great help from the charismatic presence of Savion Glover - the man universally hailed as the greatest tap dancer in the world today. "When you're making a movie about tap-dancing, it definitely helps to have the world's greatest tap dancer in it," laughs Petersen. Savion, who grew up very close to the founders of the school, who were among his teachers, displays a powerful and memorable depth. He is joined in this regard by a who's-who group of the world's greatest dancers, including Dianne Walker, Jason Samuels Smith, Dormeshia Sumbry Edwards, and Derick Grant. But there would be another presence in the film, which would end up taking on perhaps a greater significance than even these.
Because they were the original inspiration for the founders of the school, a portion of "The Wonder Kids" pays homage to the Nicholas Brothers - the legendary tap duo who most dance insiders consider the greatest tap dancers of all-time. In essence, it was the Nicholas Brothers who were the first "Wonder Kids," and Paul and Arlene Kennedy (the school's main teachers) taught their style and later in life, befriended their idols. As a consequence, Petersen and Richardson were in awe as they sat down next to Fayard Nicholas to interview him about dancing and about this special little school.
"For Pamela and I, it truly felt like we were sitting down next to Babe Ruth to talk about baseball," says Petersen "it was an amazing honor to be there." Although he was 91 at the time, they still saw all the fire and passion in Fayard's eyes that had propelled him up walls and into spectacular (and painful to watch) splits. The old master used his interview to plug the dance he loved so devoutly. But it would be his last. Shortly after they met with him he died, deeply saddening "The Wonder Kids" film crew. But Fayards words, his final message -- they were now captured for future audiences to see.
The film only came about when Petersen and his wife were looking for a new dance school for their nine-year old daughter, who was advancing too fast for the one she was in. They saw an incredible performance of the "Wonder Kids" at the John Ford Theater in Hollywood, but because the school has no budget for advertising, it took quite a while before they could actually find the place. When they did, Petersen (who was a screenwriter), was immediately struck by the cinematic potential of these incredible young dancers. He soon became fascinated by the rich history and legacy of the tiny, run-down looking school. "But the thing that convinced me and then my partner Pamela that there was a film here, was the behavior of the kids themselves. We could have called it 'The Wonderful Kids.' Here were foster kids, kids from bombed out, gang-infested areas - teenagers who could have been real thugs--but instead they were the politest, most respectful, nicest
bunch of kids you could ever meet. We thought - wow - what's the story here? How's this happening? And then we learned that this school was turning gang-bangers into professional performers and straight A students. They were providing these children with the love, the discipline, and a pride in themselves that no one else was."
"And then we got Dick Van Dyke - a universally loved icon to tell the story - and that was a dream come true. Who doesn't love Dick Van Dyke?" Petersen asks rhetorically. Judging from the reaction people like Army Archerd have had to this true underdog of a film -- evidently not many. Does such a universally positive reception surprise the filmmakers?
"It does and it doesn't," replies Petersen. "It's quite an unpretentious film - and a very UN-contemporary Hollywood film. No violence, no sex--it's as G rated as 'Bambi.' But you've got Kids, Dancing, Dick Van Dyke, a powerful story about REAL love... There's a lot to love in this film."
Tickets are $12 in advance (www.nyfilmvideo.com) and $15 at the door.
Legendary Modern Dance Piece: Metamorphesis.
This piece achieved the National Gold Medal for Actso
NAACP, The Dorothy Chandler Spotlight Award, and was

on your dance company, for upcoming compeitions, and/or
jazz/modern workshop! Or maybe you know some one that has a
dance studio looking for special work.
Latest Commercial work and choreography have been Beyonce

home The Cutting Contest Victory for the second straight
year. The summer ended on a high note with me teaching and
performing at Tap Into A Cure in Edmonton where they raised
$10,000 for 2 worthy causes. I also went to Winnipeg the
very next week to share my love of TAP. Busy is an
understatement, but I wouldn't have it any other way!!!
This picture was shot by our resident photographer/graphic
designer named Alijah Villain and it is my connection of
TAP to GOD! It is a tap shoe in a bible because I am most
open and in tune, spiritually when I am TAPdancing! Respect
The Dance! Make A Difference the best way you can!

Conference in Willowbrook, Nora Clark and I represented at
The Motor City Tap Festival, Jaybo Dixon and I ran a 6-week
ASM/BBF teen summer program on the west side of Chicago
while Star Dixon, Donnetta Jackson, Nora Clark, Jaybo Dixon
and I held a 2-week Youth TAP Boot Camp at M.A.D.D.
Rhythms' own studio. We did monthly performances at
Millennium Park and fed the crowd a delicious serving of
RHYTHM at The Taste Of Chicago. The entire family attended
the St. Louis Tap Festival and right after that I taught at
the Embracing The Dream Conference and The School Of
Performing Arts Dance Intensive. Nora, Jaybo and Star
represented at The L.A. Tap Festival where Star brought
home The Cutting Contest Victory for the second straight

Bay Area Rhythm Exchange showcases tap dancers
Bay Area Rhythm Exchange showcases tap dancers
Rachel Howard
Thursday, August 14, 2008
John Kloss didn't discover a burgeoning tap scene in San Francisco when he arrived here in 2003. So he made one.
The lean, mustachioed tapper founded his own nonprofit, Stepology, and launched the Bay Area Tap Festival. Workshop attendance has tripled over the past three years. Kloss' festival-capping show, the Bay Area Rhythm Exchange, has grown so popular that it's been expanded to two nights this year.
"The people I bring in are artistic but also interested in the showman side of things," Kloss says. "You could plug your ears and have a great time or close your eyes and have an amazing time - but you want to keep both open."
Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, a tough, muscled alumna of "Bring In 'da Noise, Bring In 'da Funk," is "expressionistic, fierce, very clean dancing, yet very fluent," Kloss says. Sam Weber, once a fixture on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," is a gallant old-school gentleman, "very regal, very associated with the balletic side of tap." Channing Cook-Holmes "shoots from the hip with incredible musicality," while Deborah Mitchell, "more of a song and dance person," brings a "Cotton Club flavor," which makes sense, since she appeared in a film called "The Cotton Club."
"I like to put all these dancers in a pot together and see what they cook up," Kloss says.
Sophisticated innovators like Savion Glover and Jason Samuels Smith are driving tap toward an ever-more complex musicality - and a new generation of tap stars are more virtuosic than ever. "The physicality in tap is so spectacular now," Kloss says. "We make jokes about the younger dancers coming straight out of 'The Matrix.' "
Kloss himself is a little more old-fashioned, practicing "classic tap," as he calls it. He says he fell in love with tap at age 16, when he saw Gene Kelly dance to "I Got Rhythm" in the movie "An American in Paris." Kloss, 35, trained in his hometown, Chicago, site of the country's biggest tap festival, the Chicago Human Rhythm Project.
San Francisco isn't about to vie with Chicago or New York as a hot tap town, but it's getting hotter here every year thanks to Kloss, and he sees the city poised to become a crossroads for Pacific Rim hoofers. "There's so much going on in Asia, especially Japan right now," he says. "Incredibly evolved rhythm tapping there. And here on the West Coast, we're geographically prime to bring that to the U.S."
For next year's Bay Area Rhythm Exchange, he hopes to import some of that fresh Asian talent. In the meantime, he says every tap performance he dances reminds him of the excitement he felt when he first saw Kelly. "The feeling of you and the audience both completely in the moment, making it together," he says, "there's nothing like it."
8 p.m. Fri.-Sat. $19-$23. Herbst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco. (415) 392-4400, www.stepology.com.

What people are saying abut Broadway Underground...
"Fabulously entertaining. Some of the most electrifying tap dancing I've ever seen by young energetic performers. Other dance performances highly unique. Very funny hosts. Great blackened catfish."
"This was a joyous event. Once it started, it moved wondrously. You could tell by the smiles on the faces with eyes glued to the stage that everyone was loving the show, full of dancers and musicians."
"You got to be there to feel it!! This time I did girls nite out, ages 3 - 70, and everyone couldn't stop talking about it. Will be there to support Broadway Underground again, and again."

Don't miss DeWitt Fleming in Solitary Confinement
Hello all. I hope you are all well. I'm doing a play September 5 and 6, 2008 in New York. It's about a kid who kills his stepfather after being molested by him for several years. When he gets older he writes a book about it. So the play is essentially about how the family deals with everything that's going on, and that went on. I play the guys older brother. So come check it out. The info is below.

About the book...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not a history of tap dancing. It is one determined woman's highly personal account of falling in love with and living the tap life. One of the linchpins behind the Great Tap Revival of the 1970s and 80s, Jane Goldberg tracked down, studied with, and performed alongside some of the tap greats of the twentieth century. In the process, she came up with a genre all her own Rhythm & Schmooze.
A romantic, Goldberg thought tap dancing would provide the most direct route to finding a partner like Fred Astaire. It did not, she discovered quickly. What she did discover, however, were her happy feet. Those feet, combined with great tenacity and endless curiosity, led her to ferret out a generation of show biz hoofers who had involuntarily gone underground. Shoot Me While I m Happy the title comes from an old vaudeville expression captures a wealth of memories both wacky and touching.
About Jane Goldberg...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the people who had a tremendous impact (on tap) was Jane Goldberg. Sometimes I think she single-footedly brought tap back to the city . . . Jane Goldberg presents people actually showed up! And we in the community felt that someone was actually looking
- The Late Gregory Hines
Jane Goldberg's memoir is like one of her famous tap-dance performances. It is easy, breezy, fast-moving, exciting, funny. You will learn things about tap and Jane that you cannot get simply by watching her on-stage.
- Howard Zinn, Professor Emeritus, Boston University
