Dr. Henry Le Tang... Passes Away.

An IMPORTANT message from Susan Abbott-Doskocil:

4/27/07

We have lost another giant in the Tap World...

Henry Le Tang passed away this morning.

A tap choreographer and instructor, my students all had to knowhe choreographed some of the keytap in several broadway shows: Eubie! [which featuredthe Hines Brothers in their first Broadway Appearance], SophisticatedLadies , and Black And Blue [his work was best appreciated in thechorus lines].

Movie Tap Choreography included
Bojangles starring Gregory Hines
Cotton Club Gregory and Richard Gere
Tap
and others.

Gary Moore's television show featured a line of dancers choreographed
by Henry.
A year and a half ago Henry and I were reminiscing about howhe wanted to go to Hollywood to choreograph for Betty Huttonand his mother would not let him go. I also reminded the interviewer and Henry that according to legend around the studio, Henry hadbeen paid to choreograph movies while someone else took the choreography credit.

We also regularly turned to a discussion of women who could tapwell in high heels. He would have laughed to see a special courserequired to assist women in learning how to work in heels. Foryears his was the only studio where he really pushed female studentsto work in heels. We had MULTIPLE conversations about that and theuncomfortable evolution to flat shoes.

He's going to be missed. He loved what I did with chorus lines for National Tap Dance Day Concert Celebrations and always attended. He saw some of his own material treated with respectand integrity at the shows. My UNLV and CCSN tap students learnedmaterial of his [with his blessing] and it always drew applause. Whata lucky person I was to have been selected by him to teach his 18 routines, that groundwork stood me well with later mentors Jack Ackerman, Cholly Atkins, Prince Spencer, Sam Weber, Fayard Nicholasand Bunny Briggs.

More later. Details on memorial and etc in next email.

All The Best-

Pandit Chitresh Das & Jason Samuels Smith Win Award!!!

PANDIT CHITRESH DAS AND JASON SAMUELS SMITH WIN ISADORA DUNCAN DANCE AWARD FOR BEST ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR FOR INDIA JAZZ SUITES!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: DARLENE DHILLON, 415-333-9000
April 24, 2007 darlene@kathak.org

Pandit Chitresh Das and Jason Samuels Smith received the prestigious Isadora Duncan Dance Award for best ensemble performance of the year for their groundbreaking collaboration India Jazz Suites. India Jazz Suites was also selected as the top dance production of the year in 2005 by the San Francisco Chronicle.

When India Jazz Suites toured India in January 2007, the Hindustan Times wrote that “…the audience rose to their feet en masse and clapped until their hands were sore.”

The Herald Sun wrote of their performance at the American Dance Festival in June 2006: “Pandit Chitresh Das, 61, and Jason Samuels Smith, 25, not only have rhythm; they are rhythm. They live and breathe rhythm. They got on top, beneath, around and even inside the rhythm and took the audience along in an amazing performance that had the Page Auditorium audience on its feet…[they] jammed together in an intricacy of beats that has to be heard to be believed. Sometimes, they moved so fast that their feet blurred like speeding racecars.”

Also nominated in this category were dancers from the San Francisco Ballet and contemporary dancers. Pandit Chitresh Das, performing Indian classical kathak and Smith, performing Tap winning this award demonstrates how Pandit Das and Mr. Smith are bringing kathak and tap to new heights and new audiences. India Jazz Suites will continue to tour throughout the United States, India and Europe over the next two years.

About India Jazz Suites: Celebrated kathak master, Pandit Chitresh Das, 62 and Emmy Award winning tap star, Jason Samuels Smith, 26, collaborated to create India Jazz Suites. Pandit Das and Mr. Smith utilize the similarities as well as the differences of kathak and tap, and their corresponding musical traditions, to explore new ways of presenting the two forms. India Jazz Suites is not a fusion, but rather each artist, as masters of their own forms, use the common ground of footwork, rhythm, improvisation, and movement to explore and shed new light on the kathak and tap traditions and their individual interpretations. Pandit Das also performs his innovation Kathak Yoga, in which he simultaneously sings, plays tabla and performs complex footwork at incredible speeds. India Jazz Suites features top caliber Indian classical and Jazz musicians: Abhijit Banerjee (tabla), Swapnamoy Banerjee (sarod), Pandit Ramesh Mishra (sarangi) and the Marcus Shelby Jazz Trio.

About the Isadora Duncan Dance Awards (The Izzies): The Izzies celebrate the unique richness, diversity, and excellence of Bay Area dance. The Isadora Duncan Dance Awards Committee seeks to honor local dance artists and promote their visibility, primarily by acknowledging outstanding achievement on an annual basis. Created in 1984 as part of Dance Bay Area, the awards were first bestowed in 1985; 2007 marks the Izzies’ 21st year. More information about the Izzie awards can be found at www.izzies-sf.org.

Pandit Chitresh Das and Jason Samuels Smith will take their collaboration to the next level in September 2007 in San Francisco when they premiere their new collaboration India Jazz Progressions. India Jazz Progressions will bring in the companies of both Pandit Das and Mr. Smith to create a whole new level of thrilling expression of rhythm, movement and music. More information can be found at www.kathak.org.

Rave Review for "Bolero NYC"!

DANCE REVIEW 'DANCE PARTY!'
A Portrait of the Big City, Painted in Little Moments

By ROSLYN SULCAS- New York Times
Published: April 14, 2007

Speed-dial the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts right away:
there is just tonight left to see Larry Keigwin’s “Bolero NYC,” a
joyful and breathtakingly clever celebration of the city and its people
that is probably the most inexpensive legal fun to be had for miles
around.

“Bolero” is a new work, commissioned by the Skirball Center as part of
“Dance Party!,” a well-conceived double bill of Chris Elam/Misnomer
Dance Theater and Keigwin & Company, presented on Thursday night.
“Cast-Iron Crutches,” a five-minute opening solo by the tall, gawky Mr.
Elam, offered a distillation of his oddly compelling physical style as
he moved from one self-bound position to another — hands joined between
legs, torso curved over knees. Set to cello strains by John Williams,
it is utterly simple and genuinely strange, a pure emanation of Mr.
Elam’s corporeal sense of self.

“Future Perfect,” also commissioned by the Skirball Center, transfers
Mr. Elam’s own odd physicality to four other dancers (Brynne
Billingsley, Jen Harmer, Coco Karol and Luke Wiley) who cavort like
children or clowns to a musical mix and do a fine job of conveying the
clumsy attempts of human beings to connect to one another.

We were back to the reality of a Starbucks on every corner with Mr.
Keigwin’s “Caffeinated,” a hilarious, jittery mix of aerobics,
cheerleading, ballet and boxing that seems to use every note of Philip
Glass’s “Glasspiece No. 3.” It was well performed by nine
coffee-cup-holding students from New York University’s Tisch School of
the Arts, where the work had its premiere two weeks ago.

“Natural Selection,” made in 2004 to insistently rhythmic music by
Michael Gordon, offered another aspect of Mr. Keigwin’s work. Dark and
dramatic, it could do with a little editing, but shows off this
choreographer’s theatrical gift for the unexpected.

There was no doubt, however, that “Bolero NYC” was the tour de force of
the evening. In addition to his six dancers, Mr. Keigwin (assisted by
Nicole Wolcott, who also collaborated on “Caffeinated”) used 46
civilians of all shapes and ages to create an entertaining city
portrait.

To Ravel’s hypnotic music, the performers read newspapers, walk dogs,
talk on cellphones, flirt, kiss, take care of children. There are
moments of unison, moments of aloneness, moments of fantasy. (Everyone
gets a trip up the red carpet.) It is funny, touching and a masterly
piece of choreographic organization. Go.

“Dance Party!” runs through tonight at the Skirball Center for the
Performing Arts, 566 LaGuardia Place, at Washington Square South,
Greenwich Village; (212) 279-4200.

Update from Violete Galagarza & Kr3t's!

World's Youngest B-Boy Taking Charge

August 8, 2006 (New York, New York)—Last Spring when 5 year-old Noah Paul, AKA B-Boy Noah-lot, joined Billboard's number one Latin group, Avetura's sold-out tour, spectators gazed in awe while witnessing the Kindergartener in action on stage. The crowds at all of the shows were mind-blown at Noah-lot's intricate B-Boy moves. Honestly, what five-year-old do you know that can do the baby freeze, Windmills, head spins, and pop and lock? And to think he's been doing that and much more since he was one-years-old.

In a cameo appearance in Tony Touch and DJ Reflex's new video, "La Colita," Noah-lot proudly shows off his intricate B-Boy moves—just as he did when he went straight to work in rapper Spoon-fed's latest video. Over the years, Spanish Harlem's boy wonder has been willingly hard at work, practicing and performing his perfected moves at high-visibility venues throughout the United States and abroad.

The recent frenzied responses to Noah-lot doesn't differ much from the reaction he received at age one, when he began to recite the script to "Tony Montana's" Scarface character word-per-word. At age two, he had his first big performance at Madison Square as an opening act for Pastor Creflo Dollar, where he danced in front of a full house with no worries. While washing dishes at his home, with a smile, Noah says, "I don't ever get nervous before a show, I'm a big man."

As one of his recent tour stops with Aventura, Noah repaid Madison Square a visit, bringing down the house again. And During Reggeaton superstar Daddy Yankee's concert at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY, Noah-lot shared the same stage with hit makers, Nina Sky, rapper N.O.R.E, and a host of other big name entertainers. The next day when callers phoned in to NYC's La Calle 105.9 FM to discuss their favorite part of the Daddy Yankee concert, by unanimous decision, Noah was voted the highlight of the night.

During Noah-lot's last performance alongside Aventura, in the Dominican Republic, he did it again—in front of over 30 thousand screaming fans. His performance brought the sold-out venue crashing down. Spectators, which heavily consisted of grown women, screamed and hollered in admiration of the B-Boy genius. His mom, Violeta Galagarza, former break dancer, and founder of Spanish Harlem based, non-profit dance company, Keep Rising to The Top (Kr3t's), had to hurry him off the stage because of the pandemonium he caused.

Galagarza and little Noah were recently invited to do a routine on the popular internationally televised talk show "Cristina." While At JFK airport on their way to the Miami taping of the show, Galagaraza went over a quick, one-minute routine with her son—which Noah memorized and delivered with no problem. After their performance, Cristina commented how amazing it was to see what she witnessed.

These days, if Lil' Noah misses dance practice, he's not a happy camper. However, to improvise for his absence, instead of sitting at home watching cartoons, he'd rather watch music videos and play his mother's 16-year collection of dance videos—rehearsing the steps he watches, until he has them down to a science.

Over the years Noah has featured in numerous publications. Below are the links to his latest coverage

THE LEARINING CHANNEL PAYS HOMAGE TO SPANISH HARLEM'S QUEEN

New York, New York (August 9)—For nearly two decades, Violeta Galagarza has been selflessly committed to her Spanish Harlem based, non-profit, Hip-Hop dance company KR3T's (Keep Rising to the Top). In recognition of her dedication and effort to her organization, The Learning Channel (TLC) decided to give back to the Queen of Spanish Harlem.

In addition to placing a huge Billboard of Violeta and her dancers on Broadway, in Times Square, TLC will be incorporating the 35 year-old choreographer of Puerto Rican decent as a part of the networks new series, "Cover Shot." In Violeta's half-hour segment (air date coming soon), the show aims at picking up where she left off seventeen years ago, when she decided to put her life on hold to give to others.

During her two day stay with the producers of Cover Shot, the single mother of three was given the Royal treatment as they reshaped her into a billboard cover model. She was waited on hand and foot as they spent time documenting her trails and tribulations as an entrepreneur. But there was only one condition to her Cover Shot—she had to block out the entire world."

I wasn't allowed to pick up my cell phone and if they saw me trying to sneak a call in they would get very upset with me," Galagarza laughs. "But it felt real good. I was very happy that they chose me to do the show." Galagarza is known to be a workaholic. If she's not on her computer making travel arrangements for her company, booking shows, coordinating rehearsals, counseling members of her community, or raising her three sons, then she's probably lending her choreography skills to some of today's hottest artists.

In July, Violet was summoned to Montreal Canada's "Just For Laughs Festival," where she spent four days as an artist development coach for Maximus, a Korean B-Boy based dance group. Prior to that, the presence of Galagarza and her five-year-old son, B-Boy Noah-lot, was requested on the hit Spanish talk show Cristina, where the two received a standing ovation for their dynamic performance.

CBS News New York has also paid recognition to Violet, and will be dedicating an upcoming segment of "Notable New Yorkers" to Violeta. Although Violeta and her dance company receive constant praise and recognition, all support by means of product and monetary donations is what keeps KR3T's doors open. For information on how you can assist Violeta's mission of offering thousands of inner-city youth find an alternative to the streets, please visit www.Kr3ts.com

A message from Andrew Merrigan

Hello Tap dancers, it is hard to believe that 8 months ago we held our first Tap Into A Cure Workshop, and it was a roaring success. We donated $8000 to the Stollery Children's Hospital. This year we are going to help the inner city children with our donation to the Edmonton School's Lunch Program where they feed children everyday with a nutritional meal that they would otherwise go without, even during the summer months. Read more on our NEW website. www.tapintoacure.com

We have added an extra day of classes, from your requests, and added a participants showcase. There will be a tap jam, panel discussion and with our special guest

Harold "Stumpy" Cromer, you never know what could happen. Spending time with Harold and hearing his many wonderful stories is intoxicating, he is living history, and we are honoured to share him with you. You will have a chance to perform a piece choreographed by Harold in "Hoofin' for Hunger", if you attend his rep classes. Robert Reed, Josh Hilberman, Bril Barrett, Lance Liles, Danny Nielsen, Logan Miller and Andrew Merrigan will join Mr. Cromer on the faculty.

Make your tap weekend an Alberta holiday, Edmonton is home to the world's largest shopping mall, West Edmonton Mall. Edmonton is known as Festival City, so there will always be something different to do every week of the summer. We are a scenic drive away from the glorious Rocky Mountains, Alberta is home to Drumheller, one of the world's best dinosaur exhibits at the Royal Tyrell Museum. Calgary, our other beautiful city, is 3 hours away and Banff and Jasper are two of the most breath taking towns on the planet. A tour of Fort McMurray and the oil sands plant is, too, a short drive away. Alberta is an adventure waiting to happen and you now can include a great tap weekend in your summer vacation. And remember our Canadian dollar is a bargain on the world market. Moms could do some back to school shopping very cheaply while your tapper gets a workout.

For those of you who haven't had a tap class, please join us at "Hoofin' for Hunger" the finale show and silent auction at Festival Place in Sherwood Park. I guarantee you will not be disappointed, so come out to the show on August 19, 2007 at 7 pm and prepare to be mesmerized by the talent you will see. There may even be a few surprise guests!

So come join us and share the weekend with amazing Tap Masters and faculty, who all want to share their styles, secrets and talent with all of you. Visit our New website at www.tapintoacure.com ;

Hope to see you in Alberta in August for Tap Into A Cure. Please pass this email to all tappers you know, no one should miss this great workshop.

Thanks

Andrew Merrigan
