Muriel Abbott
and the famous Abbotteers, also produced cafe shows at the
old Sunset
Cafe, Club Morocco, and Club DeLisa, where he spent
eighteen years. In
1933 Mr. Dyer established The Sammy Dyer School of Dancing
and in 1950
created the Dyerettes, an African American female dance
troupe known
to be the only chorus act of its kind. They toured
internationally
with some of the greatest entertainers of the twentieth
century
including Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., and Sarah Vaughn.
Special
guests include Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, star of the newly

late great

Festival and the
Chicago Tap Summit.
The 3rd Annual Chicago Tap Summit will include an array of
master
classes for all levels of tap dancers, along with history

The 3rd ANNUAL CHICAGO TAP SUMMIT
"Keeping The Tradition Alive!"
M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Inc., The Chicago Park District, The
South Shore
Cultural Center and The Harold Washington Cultural Center
bring forth
the 3rd Annual Chicago Tap Summit October 12-14. Over 10
of the
worlds most renowned Tap Dancers will come together from
New York, St.
Louis, Chicago and Canada to teach, perform and celebrate
the art of
tap dance. This year's Summit will posthumously honor
Chicago's own
Sammy Dyer. Dyer, instructor of tap and stage shows for
Muriel Abbott
and the famous Abbotteers, also produced cafe shows at the
Special
guests include Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, star of the newly
released
independent film "The Rise and Fall of Miss Thang", Robert
"The
Professor" Reed founder, producer and director of The St.
Louis Tap
Festival, Chicago's subway legend and tap mentor Mr. Taps,
Reggio "The
Hoofer" McLaughlin and M.A.D.D Rhythms' own founder and
artistic
director Bril Barrett. Jumaane Taylor, Lee Howard, Starinah
Dixon and
Ja'Bowen Dixon round out the well-diversified faculty.
Chicago's
explosive B-Boy crew, Stick & Move, All-female dance group,
Flawless
and HipHop supergroup, Hip Hop ConnXion, represents the
positive Hip
Hop movement. Collectively the faculty credits include
Broadway's
Bring in the Noise Bring in the Funk, Black & Blue,
national and
international tours of Riverdance, the movies "TAP",
"Bamboozled" and
"The Cotton Club", "Star Search", concert openings for the
late great
Sammy Davis Jr., and producers of the St. Louis Tap
Festival and the
Chicago Tap Summit.
The 3rd Annual Chicago Tap Summit will include an array of
master
classes for all levels of tap dancers, along with history
sessions
(complete with rare footage of some of the all time greats
of tap), a
participants' showcase & a panel discussion. The festival
will wrap
up with an electrifying concert "TAPathetically Speaking"
featuring
all faculties, guests and the M.A.D.D. Rhythms crew.
Chicago's
Detour JazFunk will provide live music. All classes take
place at the
South Shore Cultural Center (7059 South Shore Drive). The
performance
takes place at The Harold Washington Cultural Center (4701
S. Martin
Luther King Drive).
M.A.D.D. Rhythms is a dynamic collective of young people
from diverse
socioeconomic backgrounds, with one thing in common. A

respect for the art of tap dance or "the dance" as we like
to call it.

What does the name "Yedégbé" represent?
The name is taken from three words in the language of Fon, from the
region of Dahomey (now known as Benin). "Yedégbé" means "with the
approvals of the spirits": after they (the deities and major forces
of their pantheon) gather to decide (or grant) that something is
ready and prepared to happen. Through this project we will try to
bring back and unify the legacy that is still alive and practiced
all through the Pan-African region (including Cuba, Haiti, Dominican
Republic, Brasil, Puerto Rico, Benin and elsewhere). About the

SF Bay Times Review of '07 BARE
Transcendental Tap: Rhythm and Shoes
By Linda Ayres-Frederick
Published: August 23, 2007
Tap Dance is a uniquely American art form, and at the 2007
Bay Area
Rhythm exchange last Saturday at Herbst Theatre, the all
star lineup
proved just how much of a rhythmic musical instrument
tap-shoe clad
feet can be. Accompanying the unique “voices” of the
tap-dancing
artists were a three piece jazz band which included
Channing
Cook-Holmes on drums (himself a phenomenal tap dancer),
Marcus Shelby
on bass, pianist Sista Kee, and two special guest stars:
Carlos Aguirre
of the group Felonius with beat-boxing/vocal percussion,
and The Unique
Derique performing his own Hambone body percussion.
Bay Area Rhythm Exchange Festival Director John Kloss
brought together
an unrivaled and dazzling array of tap and musical talent
that invoked
an appreciation of tap’s history while inspiring an
excitement for
tap’s present and future. This year’s Festival was
definitely one of
the most upbeat experiences to witness. Unlike flamenco,
which can
sometimes get heavy-handed in the wrong pair of shoes,
these tappers
showed unparalleled rhythmic patterns that took everyone to
another
level of experience. Kloss’ own very impressive skills came
out in the
astounding “contest” of rhythmic wills number between
himself and
Carlos Aquirre’s stunning beat-box/vocals.
What is most amazing is how easy the dancers make difficult
steps look.
From the smiling, sensuous, classic “song and dance” style
of Deborah
Mitchell — who did a smooth rendition of Sunny Side of the
Street in
her intro number — to the intensely improvisational,
expressionistic
style of Dormeshia Sumbry-Edward, who riffed back and forth
with
drummer Cook-Holmes. Both these New Jersey women created
primal yet
transcendental rhythms with their feet. Ms Sumbry-Edwards
was
particularly trancelike and hypnotic, and exciting to
listen to and
watch.
Equally talented and extraordinary was the tall,
commanding, Fred
Astaire-like presence of Sam Weber in his solo My One and
Only Love.
Handsome in a blue silk shirt, this technical wizard
executed graceful
pirouettes while riffing at top speed with drummer
Cook-Holmes — who
also danced with stunning precision later in spite of his
earlier
warning that he might not be able to because of an injury.
While the first half of the show comprised primarily of
solo numbers,
the second half began with the humorous neon effect of
day-glow
accessories in the dark in an ensemble piece with each
artistsgiven an
additional opportunity to show off their individual styles.
A highlight
of the second half was the Stepology Electronic Tapology
music created
by The Unique Derique who really did “play” his body which
was wired
somehow to the machine so that each time he tapped part of
his torso, a
different sound emitted. He even asked a member of the
audience to come
up and join him in a demonstration. The young man he chose
did a great
job himself and appeared to be schooled (self- or
otherwise) in the art.
Completing the experience was the invitation to all
“tappers” in the
audience to join in what was called a “shim-sham” finale
where the
stage was filled with talented tappers of every size, age,
and level of
talent, all of whom obviously enjoyed stepping forward and
tapping
their and our hearts out in a true celebration of this
uniquely
transcendental art form. Presented by Stepology, this
year’s Bay Area
Rhythm Exchange was an obvious toe-tapping success!

Between Thought and Sound: Graphic Notation in Contemporary Music
Between Thought and Sound:
Graphic Notation In Contemporary Music
Now through October 20, 2007
FREE
Exploring the intersection of drawing and sound, this show
includes experimental scores by more than thirty composers
who have relinquished traditional musical notation in favor
of their own invented visual systems employing graphic or
pictorial elements. Their musical compositions take the
form of abstract drawings, videos, and digital renderings
filled with complex pictograms, evocative mark-making,
gestural symbols, and intricate codes of numbers, letters,
and color. These highly personal vocabularies are the
catalysts for a social process of translation and
open-ended interpretation between composer and performer.
The artists included in the exhibition are Laura Andel,
Robert Ashley, James Beckett, David Behrman, Cathy
Berberian, Earle Brown, Cornelius Cardew, Tony Conrad, John
Driscoll, Morton Feldman, Jon Gibson, Tom Johnson, Alison
Knowles, Joan La Barbara, Annea Lockwood, Alvin Lucier,
Miya Masaoka, Kaffe Matthews, Meredith Monk, Gordon Mumma,
Anthony Jay Ptak, Steve Roden, Marina Rosenfeld, James
Saunders, Michael J. Schumacher, Elliott Sharp, Wadada Leo
Smith, Yasunao Tone, David Tudor, Stephen Vitiello, and
Christian Wolff.
This exhibition is sponsored by Altria Group, Inc.
Additional support was provided by the American Center
Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts,
Thea Westreich and Ethan Wagner, and the Fifth Floor
Foundation. Music programs at The Kitchen are made possible
with generous support from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable
Trust, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The New York State
Music Fund, and with public funds from the New York State
Council on the Arts, a state agency.
