SF Bay Times Review of '07 BARE

Transcendental Tap: Rhythm and Shoes
By Linda Ayres-Frederick
Published: August 23, 2007

Tap Dance is a uniquely American art form, and at the 2007
Bay Area
Rhythm exchange last Saturday at Herbst Theatre, the all
star lineup
proved just how much of a rhythmic musical instrument
tap-shoe clad
feet can be. Accompanying the unique “voices” of the
tap-dancing
artists were a three piece jazz band which included
Channing
Cook-Holmes on drums (himself a phenomenal tap dancer),
Marcus Shelby
on bass, pianist Sista Kee, and two special guest stars:
Carlos Aguirre
of the group Felonius with beat-boxing/vocal percussion,
and The Unique
Derique performing his own Hambone body percussion.

Bay Area Rhythm Exchange Festival Director John Kloss
brought together
an unrivaled and dazzling array of tap and musical talent
that invoked
an appreciation of tap’s history while inspiring an
excitement for
tap’s present and future. This year’s Festival was
definitely one of
the most upbeat experiences to witness. Unlike flamenco,
which can
sometimes get heavy-handed in the wrong pair of shoes,
these tappers
showed unparalleled rhythmic patterns that took everyone to
another
level of experience. Kloss’ own very impressive skills came
out in the
astounding “contest” of rhythmic wills number between
himself and
Carlos Aquirre’s stunning beat-box/vocals.

What is most amazing is how easy the dancers make difficult
steps look.
From the smiling, sensuous, classic “song and dance” style
of Deborah
Mitchell — who did a smooth rendition of Sunny Side of the
Street in
her intro number — to the intensely improvisational,
expressionistic
style of Dormeshia Sumbry-Edward, who riffed back and forth
with
drummer Cook-Holmes. Both these New Jersey women created
primal yet
transcendental rhythms with their feet. Ms Sumbry-Edwards
was
particularly trancelike and hypnotic, and exciting to
listen to and
watch.

Equally talented and extraordinary was the tall,
commanding, Fred
Astaire-like presence of Sam Weber in his solo My One and
Only Love.
Handsome in a blue silk shirt, this technical wizard
executed graceful
pirouettes while riffing at top speed with drummer
Cook-Holmes — who
also danced with stunning precision later in spite of his
earlier
warning that he might not be able to because of an injury.

While the first half of the show comprised primarily of
solo numbers,
the second half began with the humorous neon effect of
day-glow
accessories in the dark in an ensemble piece with each
artistsgiven an
additional opportunity to show off their individual styles.
A highlight
of the second half was the Stepology Electronic Tapology
music created
by The Unique Derique who really did “play” his body which
was wired
somehow to the machine so that each time he tapped part of
his torso, a
different sound emitted. He even asked a member of the
audience to come
up and join him in a demonstration. The young man he chose
did a great
job himself and appeared to be schooled (self- or
otherwise) in the art.

Completing the experience was the invitation to all
“tappers” in the
audience to join in what was called a “shim-sham” finale
where the
stage was filled with talented tappers of every size, age,
and level of
talent, all of whom obviously enjoyed stepping forward and
tapping
their and our hearts out in a true celebration of this
uniquely
transcendental art form. Presented by Stepology, this
year’s Bay Area
Rhythm Exchange was an obvious toe-tapping success!

For more information about Stepology’s concerts,
performers, the Bay
Area Tap Festival, future programs, and workshops, visit

Between Thought and Sound: Graphic Notation in Contemporary Music

Between Thought and Sound:
Graphic Notation In Contemporary Music

Now through October 20, 2007

FREE
Exploring the intersection of drawing and sound, this show
includes experimental scores by more than thirty composers
who have relinquished traditional musical notation in favor
of their own invented visual systems employing graphic or
pictorial elements. Their musical compositions take the
form of abstract drawings, videos, and digital renderings
filled with complex pictograms, evocative mark-making,
gestural symbols, and intricate codes of numbers, letters,
and color. These highly personal vocabularies are the
catalysts for a social process of translation and
open-ended interpretation between composer and performer.
The artists included in the exhibition are Laura Andel,
Robert Ashley, James Beckett, David Behrman, Cathy
Berberian, Earle Brown, Cornelius Cardew, Tony Conrad, John
Driscoll, Morton Feldman, Jon Gibson, Tom Johnson, Alison
Knowles, Joan La Barbara, Annea Lockwood, Alvin Lucier,
Miya Masaoka, Kaffe Matthews, Meredith Monk, Gordon Mumma,
Anthony Jay Ptak, Steve Roden, Marina Rosenfeld, James
Saunders, Michael J. Schumacher, Elliott Sharp, Wadada Leo
Smith, Yasunao Tone, David Tudor, Stephen Vitiello, and
Christian Wolff.

This exhibition is sponsored by Altria Group, Inc.

Additional support was provided by the American Center
Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts,
Thea Westreich and Ethan Wagner, and the Fifth Floor
Foundation. Music programs at The Kitchen are made possible
with generous support from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable
Trust, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The New York State
Music Fund, and with public funds from the New York State
Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Marcus Garvey Park/Attempting to Silence the Drums of Harlem

A message from Rebecca Scott: Marcus Garvey Park /Attempting to Silence the Drums in Harlem

Here's an update on this situation:

Boro Comm. Castro had a second meeting with the Marcus Garvey Park drummers on Friday,July 13 at 5pm at Marcus Garvey Park, along with the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance. At this meeting, Comm. Castro and Mr. Green, a contact person for the drummers, along with other drummers, announced that they picked a site within the park to be designated a drumming site. Comm.Castro said that benches would be installed in the site (near theacropolis andthe amphitheater) today, Saturday July 14. This is now an officially sanctioned area for drumming, like the drumming circle in CentralPark. Drummers have the right to drum there on their regular day and time and can't be removed. If there is a program at the amphitheater, the drummers can also move location. Park EnforcementPatrol havebeen instructed to monitor the area only to protect thedrummers, notto remove them.

If you have more questions about this, from the drummers' perspective, I can give you a few contacts for thedrummers. Feelfree to email me for that contact information.

Marcus Garvey Park Drummers, July 2 2007

Sat June 30 two white police officers approached drummersat 5th Ave Marcus Garvey park, at about 7:30pm, stating that they received complaints about the drumming being to loud.

Two spokespeople, a man and woman, from the drummersorganizationtold the officers, "We have been drumming every week until nine p.m.for the last thirty years ", They asked the officers why were theycoming now when it was only 7:30pm. The officers responded that the residents at 2005 5th Ave (across the street) had complained that the drumming was too loud. The drummers said "We will continue until 9pm".

The policemen then called for reinforcement, when a carwith a barofficer came , the drummers spokesperson continued along the lines oftheir right to drum, "it's our culture fromAfrica and the Caribbean" One women drummer said about the white residents. "They have forced Black people out of Harlem to move here, they knew thatwe drum here every week, if they don't want to hear the drumming they should move"

Still another police car came, this time with lights, andabout nine policemen. With the drummers, women, children and menaround eightypeople, the drummers resisted their position and continuedto drum, while an assigned spokesperson talked to police offers.

Across the street at Fifth Ave condo (124) the four white residents watched while the struggle continued. The drummers, dancersand crowdtook out their cellphones and video cameras recording. After 25 minutes the police backed down and the drummers drummed louder as a protest and message to the white residents that they will fight fortheir African culture.

Please join us next Saturday July 7th to help support the MarcusGarvey Park drummers in their struggle against the ongoing police harassment.

ATSHUSHI TAKENOUCHI

Biography

Atsushi Takenouchi joined Butoh dance company"Hoppo-Butoh-ha" in Hokkaido in 1980. His last performancewith the company "Takazashiki" (1984) was worked on byButoh-founderTatsumi Hijikata. He has been working on his own Jinen Butoh since 1986 andcreated solos "Tanagokoro", "Ginkan", "ltteki" as a universal expression of nature, earth and ancient times and his impression of themoment, formulated from the people around him, and the environment. Atsushi has danced at sights such as the Killing Fields in Cambodia, Kobe earthquake,Auschwitz-Birkenau, sacred temples around the world, thousands of year old trees, and desolate environments in Asia, Brazil , Eastern Europe.Atsushi has been touring Japan, Asia and Europe extensively in the lastdecades. Since 2002 he has taught wilderness dance workshops in the US , and collaborated with dancersand actors in Europe and the United States. He currently lives in Paris.

Dancing Life
"Dance is devotion of life." I learned this while mytraveling nature fields called JINEN. This means I should dance to "my life," to the moment, and to now which lasts forever. I feel we have forgottenmemories of days when we lived connected with nature's gift (such as water, wind, grass, trees, and animals). A long time ago we danced, forgetting day andnight. We forgot ourselves, and became just as one life with the earth? What about now? We've been choreographed to fit into given pattern.

Improvisation "It's a dance without choreography. You dance as you feel, sharpening your senses, with conviction. You can't improvise unless you can enjoy what you are doing and act alive. Sometimes we may looklike two dragons, or two jellyfish talking with each other, the moon and the sun, or two dancing cranes in love. We all have the blood of anative and spiritual dancer."

Each Clinic runs for approximately three hours, with the first half-hour appointment at 4:00 pm , and the last appointments at 6:30 pm . It is open to all individuals and art organizations that have a legitimate legal issue. In the past, artists and arts organizations have presentedissues in the following areas: copyright, trademark, contract, employment issues, non- payments, collaborations, etc. For example, anartist who has been offered a contract may seek assistance in understanding its basic terms. An artist may as certain whether her intellectual property rights are being infringed. Exploring alternatives for starting for- profit and not-for-profit business entities is also acommon matter.

A message from Brandee Williams Lara: Perfect Tap Floor? Need Your Advice!

Greetings Tap Experts, Studio Owners, et al:HELP!

As you may know, I teach tap at wonderful, fabulous ChapmanUniversity in Orange, CA.

We have a fairly new dance building, with a room dedicatedto tap anddance forms not in need of a marly surface. When the building was brand new, the floor was workable. In my opinion, it was always too "fast." I noticed that dancers'postureschanged in order to compensate for the feeling of losing control.Increasingly, dancers have slipped and/or fallen, and, frankly, there are some things requiring quick weight or directional changes that we just don't do anymore. (Even one of the modern teachers, who sometimes uses the room, said he noticed the same posturalphenomenon.)
Last year, the floor got worse when the maintenence crew apparently resurfaced/waxed it when they went in to repair somedivots. They made it "all shiny and pretty" to be sure! Now, it is virtually an ice rinkin some places, and to make matters worse, it is uneven;that is,slower in some areas to really fast in others; makingsliding a"trip," if you know what I mean!! ;o)Well, our fantabulous department chair is always there toplease, andwants to know, once and for all, what I would tell to our facilities team to make it right. They will do pretty much anything, except replace it. (I believe the floor is maple, though I'm notpositive. Itis a properly "sprung floor," with an apparent cost of$10,000 when itwas installed)

So, experts: what would you advise??? What would you dowith this beautiful wood dance floor to make its surface right for tap??? Do youknow of a perfect finishing product??? Is there anything we should avoid???

THANK YOU very much for your advice!!
