FREE VLA Legal Clinics in July!

Dear VLA Friends and Members,

Due to a hot summer and as a thank you to the arts community, VLA is holding two FREE Legal Clinics during the month of July. These two FREE VLA Legal Clinics will take place in VLA's offices on Wednesday, July 11th and Wednesday, July 25th, from 4pm to 7pm. The Clinic is a forum that provides artists and arts organizations with the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a volunteer attorney for 30 minutes. During that private appointment, attorneys respond to inquiries about any arts-related legal matters. Each Clinic runs for approximately three hours, with the first half-hour appointment at 4:00 pm , and the last appointments at 6:30 pm . It is open to all individuals and art organizations that have a legitimate legal issue. In the past, artists and arts organizations have presentedissues in the following areas: copyright, trademark, contract, employment issues, non- payments, collaborations, etc. For example, anartist who has been offered a contract may seek assistance in understanding its basic terms. An artist may as certain whether her intellectual property rights are being infringed. Exploring alternatives for starting for- profit and not-for-profit business entities is also acommon matter.

To sign-up for one free 30-minute appointment, the artist or arts organization representative must first call our Art LawLine at 212.319.2787 x1, and speak with one of our interns regarding their question. Our interns will then consult with a staff attorney to make sure your concern is appropriate for the Clinic. Upon staff attorney approval, the caller will then be given one free 30-minuteappointment to one of the two free legal clinics.

These two free clinics will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis to those approvedby VLA for an appointment.
