Tap Dancers march in McDonald's 75th Anniversary Thanksgiving Day Parade
Chicago Human Rhythm Project will once again been wishing
"Tappy Holidays" to Chicagoland by shim-shamming down State
St. as part of the 75th annual McDonald's Thanksgiving Day
Parade. This year, we're thrilled to announce that over
225 dancers are participating, accompanied by the beat of
over 10 drummers organized by Brian Wach and Huei Yuan Pan.
Even more exciting, the 2008 parade broadcast on WGN has
been expanded to 3 hours, allowing for an hour of dedicated
performances before the parade begins. The Parade has
asked CHRP to be one of the performance groups, so don't
miss our tappers live on State St. at 8:50am sharp.
With all this exciting news, we hope you can join us on
State St., watch from home, or just set your DVR before the
parade passes by!

JAZZ SHELIA BARKER
Sheila Barker needs no introduction to anyone even vaguely
familiar with the world of dance. Dance Teacher magazine
recently answered a letter asking “what makes a good dance
teacher” by using a picture of Ms. Barker! (“Google” Sheila
Barker and you’ll find that literally thousands of dance
teachers across America list her in their bios as a
favorite teacher or influence.)
Sheila has been an educator, choreographer and performer
for over a dozen years in places such as Brazil, Japan,
Mexico, Canada, Europe and across the USA, with her home
base being New York City’s Broadway Dance Center. She
received a BFA in dance and has extensive training in Jazz,
Ballet, Modern, Tap, African/Dunham and Musical Theatre.
Her performance background ranges from Broadway (Uptown,
It’s Hot!, choreographed by Mercedes Ellington -- Sheila
was also the dance captain.) and Off-Broadway to
industrials, music videos and soap operas (One Life to
Live).
Sheila has choreographed many industrials, music videos,
and stage shows for recording artists. She recently
appeared in concert with Savion Glover in Invitation to a
Dancer. Sheila is co-founder and director of Success
America, a New York summer intensive program for young
inspiring dancers. It has placed many youngsters in shows
such as: Smokey Joe's Café, Footloose, Big, Contact, The
Music Man, and Radio City Music Hall.
BALLET Robin Russell Ouellette
Robin Russell Ouellette was an apprentice member of The
Greater Bridgeport Ballet Company and performed in such
ballets as “The Nutcracker”, “Coppelia”, “Peter and the
Wolf” and “The Snow Queen”. In “The Nutcracker”, she was
directed by Genia Melikova and danced with featured artists
Jan Miller, Bryan Pitts and Fernando Bujones. In
“Coppelia”, Robin worked under the artistic direction of
Madame Gabriela Taub-Darvash and apprenticed with her
ballet company in New York.
In 2004 I began my tenure instructing at the Judyth Parks
Academy of Dance and Music, located in Wallingford and
Southington, under Courtney Parks-Billings and enhanced the
existing ballet program as Head Ballet Teacher for students
ranging in age from 7 through adult.

A Message from Group Theatre Too:
Group Theatre Too
I know the Group Theatre Too has asked a lot of you.
But in the next year, GTT will need you more than ever
before.
Together, we can make sure more people head to the theatre
for an affordable evening of entertainment participate in
art education programs, experience "aftermath", GTT's
social awareness theatre piece or exercise their creative
power and hone their artistic skills.
That's why I'm asking you to dig deep and make another
donation to help us to continue our efforts to ensure
affordable, quality theatre, effective arts education
programs and the creation of new artistic works.
Take a minute to consider the difference we can make, then
please make a donation of $5 or more today. Remember, all
donations for the Group Theatre Too made through our fiscal
sponsor The Field are tax-deductible to the fullest extent
of the law.
GTT has been blessed over the last 5 years to have been
fortunate enough to have produced many theatre projects,
educational programs and dance works. Plus, we're still on
our feet and dancing strong despite the rising economic
situation!
Our shared hope to continue our artistic and educational
efforts can make a difference in building a stronger arts
community if we continue to work together.
Please make a donation of $5 or more and stand with GTT as
we face unprecedented challenges in our changing world.

Finger Lakes Tap Dance Festival 2009
Dear friends and supporters,
I hope this email finds you well. As a friend and
supporter of the Finger Lakes Tap Dance Festival I wanted
to connect with you regarding the 2009 Festival.
The Tap Legacy Foundation, Inc. is currently in the process
of restructuring its festival programming to ensure maximum
community impact and sustainability, and in so doing, has
found a need to temporarily suspend the Finger Lakes Tap
Dance Festival for 2009, with strong plans to return in
March 2010.
I would personally like to thank you for your past support
and look forward to seeing you again in March 2010, if not
at another Tap Legacy Event. In the interim, I hope that
you will join TLF as we continue to grow, preserving and
advancing the art of tap dance.
Sincerely,
Andrew J. Nemr

is back – Dance Charlotte! at Booth Playhouse on November
14 and 15. You will be able to see spectacular dance works
from the following choreographers and companies: Daniel
Gwirtzman, Christian von Howard, Stephanie Milling, Alice
Howes, Nicole C. Lalibertè, E.E. Motion and Caroline
Calouche & Co.
Opening the program will be the Charlotte Dance Festival
Repertory Ensemble performing a historic modern dance work,
Greek Dreams with Flute, choreographed by a forerunner in
American Dance, Erick Hawkins (1909 -1994). Erick Hawkins
received the President's Medal for the Arts at the White
House on October 14, 1994 from President Clinton. In the
President's words: "For his boldness and talent he commands
a legendary place in the American Modern Dance
heritage…truly a pioneer."
Katherine Duke, a Charlotte native and Artistic Director of
the Erick Hawkins Foundation, cast Greek Dreams with Flute

"The Mitten Tree"...Giving to the United Way
"The Mitten Tree"...Giving to the United Way
Here is an idea that I began at my dance studio in 2004,
and I would like to share it with other dance studios in
the hopes that you will consider doing the same, and
possibly help to make this a well recognized, national
event. I hope you will consider doing this at your studio
this year. If you are looking for an easy, yet very
worthwhile charitable thing to suggest to your studio
families for the holidays, consider doing a "Mitten Tree",
and choosing "The United Way" in your county as the
charity. Here is how we have done this:
We put an undecorated Christmas tree in the studio waiting
room, and sent home memos about this project. We asked
families to consider donating a pair of mittens, (or
gloves) for a boy or girl or an adult, and when they
brought them in they were hung on the tree. They also
first, stopped by the front desk, and wrote their name on
one of our "paper" mittens. (We purchased packs of die cut
mittens at a local craft store.) Then once the "real"
mittens got collected by The United Way, we used the paper
mittens to decorate the tree as a reminder of their
generosity during the holiday season. (The United Way needs
the collected mittens (and gloves) by mid December in order
to distribute them to the needy in time for the holidays.)
The children were very excited about doing this as were
their parents. It gave them an opportunity to "give" to
someone less fortunate during the holiday season. It was
completely optional...no pressure at all. In addition, the
cost of mittens or gloves is quite reasonable and they are
a small, easy item to transport and collect.
I implore you to consider to do this at your studio next
year, and begin a tradition as we have, and to donate them
to the United Way in your county. They have a program
called "Wrapped In Love" and mittens are a much requested
item. Start early, as delivery deadline is first week in
December!
This could become a huge, nation wide event if numerous
studios would decide to participate. It really takes very
little effort and not a lot of space in your studio....just
a tree and flyers to distribute stating your mission. At
my dance studio, we began this program in 2004, and within
just 2 weeks, were able to collect 250 pairs of mittens.
By starting this right around Thanksgiving in 2005, we more
than doubled that amount. We have started a tradition that
we hope continues to grow, and are now imploring other
dance studios throughout the country to do the same.
Please feel free to share this with your family and
friends, and any other dance studios you have contact with.
Please Note: If you could so kindly send an email to
kadstudio@gmail.com or call me at (908-371-1757) if you
decide to do this, as I would like to keep a log of how
many studios get involved. Please drop me a note with your
name, and the name and address of the sudio and how many
pairs of mittens were collected. Please feel free to
contact me for any assistance, or if you have any
questions.
Thank you for your holiday spirit and generosity.
