Urban Artist Initiative

$100,000 in New Grants for New York City Artists of African, Asian & Latino Descent

The URBAN ARTIST INITIATIVE / NEW YORK CITY (UAI/NYC) –- comprised of the Asian American Arts Alliance, Association of Hispanic Arts, Harlem Arts Alliance, and Queens Council on the Arts, in partnership with the Bronx Council on the Arts and New York Foundation for the Arts –- has launched a new grants program for individual artists of color in New York City in all disciplines.

Grants, ranging from $250 to $2,500, will be awarded to support new works in all areas of visual, literary, and performing arts in the creation, development, and/or completion stages. In this pilot program, UAI/NYC will consider applications from individual artists of color of African, Asian, and Latino descent who reside in the five boroughs of New York City. How-to-Apply Workshops are scheduled with the partnering organizations throughout New York City, including meetings in cooperation with the Brooklyn Arts Council and the Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island.

UAI/NYC’s goals are to:
1) provide direct grants to artists of color throughout New York City for new work;
2) increase the capacity of its partner community-based arts organizations who will award these grants; and
3) develop strategies for improved access to information for New York artists citywide including dissemination and new technology.

UAI/NYC is a major project of the Creative Communities program of Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) – a ten-year national campaign to improve conditions for artists in all disciplines, so that artists can more readily do their creative work and contribute to community life. UAI/NYC has received major funding from LINC, The Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Booth Ferris Foundation.
