DIVINE RHYTHM NEWS - June 18th 2006

EVENTS: Omar Edwards’ Tap Dancin’ in Music at Minton’s Playhouse 206-210 W 118th st.EVERY Tuesday at 10pmFREE!Followed by a Jam Session at 11:30pm -----Minton's Playhouse to Re-Open on Friday, May 19thPosted: 2006-05-12 LEGENDARY HARLEM JAZZ CLUB, KNOWN AS THE BIRTHPLACE OF BEBOP, SET TO OPEN ITS DOORS ON FRIDAY MAY 19TH FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE EARLY 70'S Leaders of Housing & Services, Inc., among the city's premier providers of supportive housing for the formerly homeless, announced today that Harlem's most famous and legendary jazz club, Minton's Playhouse, shuttered since the early 70's, will re-open on Friday May 19th. Minton's was known as the birthplace of bebop during a legendary 32 year run on the first floor of the Cecil Hotel, a 103 year old building that now operates as an 89-unit, HSI run supportive single room occupancy hotel. Thelonius Monk was the house piano player and headliners who played the room included such legends as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Quincy Jones, Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday. Earl Spain, a well-known Harlem club operator, is the proprietor of the new Minton's, which occupies the same space as the original club at 206-210 West 118th Street. True to its history the club will feature Monday night jam sessions in an intimate atmosphere inspired by the 1940's. “The reopening of Minton's is a truly special event, not only for jazz enthusiasts, but for Harlem as well” said Lawrence Oaks, Executive Director of HSI. “Harlem's renaissance would not be complete without the comeback of this important cultural venue”. You. HERE. Me. Now?”Jacob's Pillow Festival,Inside/Out Series (outdoors, against the backdrop of the Berkshire Hills)Marcia and Seymour Simon Performance SpaceBecket, MAJune 23, 6:30pmInspired by the many rhythms of her native Brazil, Cintia Chamecki uses both composition and choreography as tools to tell stories that evoke the inherent humor, thoughtfulness , joy, and spontaneity of tap in "Can. You. HERE. Me. Now?". Baiao, samba, bossa nova, maracatu and other rhythms serve as the basis for improvisation and choreography as the dancers compose with their feet and develop spontaneous choreography. After four years of performing her one-woman show in her native Brazil, and researching group language with her ensemble RITMICO, Cintia Chamecki comes back to Jacob’s Pillow inside/out series with “Can. You. HERE. Me. Now”.Chamecki has gathered musicians Oran Etkin, Dionisio and Ze Mauriio and dancers Jenai Cutcher and Igor Correa for the first time ever to communicate to American audiences her visions of Brazilian culture and tap dance. Co-director Hannah Heller helped articulate the form and shape maintaining the storytelling element of the dance.“Can. You. HERE. Me. Now?” sets tap dance to the music of some of the most prominent Brazilian composers, both traditional and modern. The constant mixing of choreography and improvisation makes this an exciting, ever-changing show for both the audience and performers. “At one moment, the rapid-fire delivery of Cintia Chamecki’s five-membertap ensemble sounds big enough to be an entire orchestra, and in the next, quiets to a whisper. The performers onstage at the Duke Theater in New YorkCity work each musical phrase as if it were dialogue. They modulate theircadence to mimic the inflections of human speech. You can almost hear therise of question marks and the fall of commas.” Karen Hildebrand, Dance MagazineCintia Chamecki is from Curitiba, Brazil, and has performed her tap choreography and improvisation in New York City, Brazil, Japan and Portugal. She toured Brazil with her solo show “Ta No Pe” in 2000 and 2001.In 2002 she complete her second full evening show “Sapato Baixo”, in collaboration with bass player Glauco Solter. In New York she has appeared in "The Elegance and Comedy of Tap" (Town Hall), "Vaudeville 2000", "Tap Fusion" and the New York City Tap Festival. Her work has also been seen at Jaob’s Pillow Inside/out, Performance Space 122, Movement Research, Dixon Place, the 17th Annual Downtown Dance Festival, Dance Theater Workshop and Lincoln Center Out-of Doors. She was featured in "What Is Tap" a documentary for Italian television (RAI).In addition to her work as a soloist and choreographer, Chamecki currently performs with Barbara Duffy and Company and was a featured dancer with the Peggy Spina Tap Company and Tap Collective. She appeared with the ATDO and with Manhattan Tap 2 . In Brazil, Chamecki was co-choreographer and artistic director of "A Cooperativa da Danca.www.cintiachamecki.com/ingles"a one-woman percussion ensemble" Jack Anderson – The New York TimesPress contact:cintia@cintiachamecki.com212-6803787 or 917-6894277 *************************** SPECIAL 2-HOUR WORKSHOP with JASON SAMUELS SMITH ONE DAY ONLY in NYC!Sunday, June 25th 20061-3pm. First, congratulations to all participants of Dance Chicago 2005 for your spectacular performances. Over 16,000 audience members and press were inspired by your performances: more premieres, higher quality performances, greater talent than ever before. Second, this notice is a request to contact me immediately if you wish to propose a work for Dance Chicago 2006. The development of new choreography of the highest artistic quality remains a major focus of the festival. The deadline for the submission of a videotape of your work is July 1, 2006. We have redesigned the application process. This application will apply to everyone, including Dance Slam. You must go to to fill out the new online form. The new form must be emailed to me: john@dancechicago.com In addition, we now require a $20 application fee to review up to 10 works. This year begins a new focus for the festival. We will be changing much of our marketing campaign, our show themes, etc. We will try to adjust the festival to the growing needs and rapidly changing directions of the Chicago Dance community. It is our intention to remain the most important creative outlet for our artists and the most important place for them to reach larger audiences. Our average Dance Chicago attendance per show at the Athenaeum exceeds the seating capacity of most dance venues in the city. In addition, our Best of Dance Chicago Tour has seen enormous audience growth of the last 3 seasons.I will again be curating each work on each program, via dvds (or videotapes). It is impossible to see all your concerts live, as there are so many! I must see your proposed work: either a performance dvd or a rehearsal dvd. Festival positions are secured by the quality of the work submitted. Works should come from two different categories: 1) submission of a work that is finished and has been performed and can be submitted on dvd now (July 1 deadline), and 2) new work created - choreographers must make commitments to music, number of dancers, cast/sets/costumes/lights and furnish a rehearsal dvd or arrange a live rehearsal viewing prior to July 15, 2006. If you don't have the work on dvd yet, send in the application by July 1 and note the date when you will send the dvd.We are interested in seeing quality work from anyone, but the dances must fit into our programming structure. Two programs, New Dances and Dance Slam, allow for greater range in artistic expression. Programs like World Rhythms, Dance for Kids, Too!, Stars of Dance Chicago, and Best of Dance Chicago need to be more specific. We want you to start immediately on your dance for 2006. If you wish to create dances for more than one program remember that the perfection of one dance is more important than the creation of two or more average ones. In addition, shorter dances are more versatile and can often be used on multiple programs. Dances longer that 8 minutes have to be exceptional to hold up to audiences and critics. The optimum time for a dance is 5 to 9 minutes. The most successful works (i.e. good reviews, audience appeal, etc.) are generally in this time range. We offer only performance fees, not creation fees. The fee level is directly related to the level of funding from corporations, foundations and individuals. What we can offer to artists changes each year. You should decide to be in Dance Chicago for reasons other than financial compensation. It cost us about $2,000 in artistic, marketing, production and administrative activity for each of the approximately 250 dances we present. To encourage creativity and innovation we will be continuing the Dance Chicago Choreography Award. This cash award of $1,000 will be given to the Chicago choreographer who produces, in our opinion, the best Dance Chicago premiere in 2006. The winner for 2005 was Eddy Ocampo.Again, you must contact me immediately if you are interested in participating in Dance Chicago 2006. Email is the only efficient means of communicating what you are proposing: john@dancechicago.com.If we do not hear from you by July 1, 2006, we will not be able to include your company's name in the season brochure.Applications are available on the website at www.dancechicago.com. Video tapes or dvds submitted last year must be picked up at the Dance Chicago Center (next to the Athenaeum) in the evenings, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm before July 31. How could anyone be stopped by the color of her skin after her invincibly lush sensuality and witty intelligence had seduced audiences on Broadway, in Hollywood films and in immensely popular dance shows that toured the world? And how could anyone cram black American dance into one or two conveniently narrow categories — or for that matter ignore the good strong roots that would one day grow green stems and leaves — with the vision of her company's lavishly theatrical African and Caribbean dance revues in mind? Miss Dunham was one of the first American artists to focus on black dance and dancers as prime material for the stage. She burst into public consciousness in the 1940's, at a time when opportunities were increasing for black performers in mainstream theater and film, at least temporarily. But there was little middle ground there between the exotic and the demeaning everyday stereotypes. Ms. Dunham's dance productions were certainly exotic, and sometimes fell into uncomfortable clichés. But a 1987 look at her work, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's "Magic of Katherine Dunham" program, confirmed that she also evoked ordinary lives that were lived with ordinary dignity.Miss Dunham, as she was universally known, was by no means the only dance artist to push for the recognition of black dance in the 1940's, when Pearl Primus pushed, too, though a great deal less glamorously. But though Miss Dunham's academic credentials as an anthropologist were impeccable, including a doctorate from the University of Chicago, it was her gift for seduction that helped most to pave the way for choreographers like Donald McKayle, Talley Beatty and Alvin Ailey, who were the first wave of what is today an established and influential part of the larger world of American modern dance.Ailey's first encounter with her, as a newly stage-struck boy in his mid-teens, says a great deal about Miss Dunham's appeal. Intrigued by handbills advertising her 1943 "Tropical Revue," he ventured into the Biltmore Theater in downtown Los Angeles, his hometown, where it was playing. There he was plunged into a world of color, light and heat that was populated by highly trained dancers with a gift for powerful immediacy, who were dressed in subtle, stylish costumes designed by John Pratt, Miss Dunham's husband. After the show, Ailey followed the crowd making its way backstage to her dressing room and was again stunned when the door opened on a vision of beautiful hanging fabrics and carpeting, paintings, books, flowers and baskets of fruit. And there was La Dunham, dressed in vividly colored silks and exuding irresistible gaiety and warmth. Ailey returned to the show several times a week, let into the theater by the Dunham dancers who had looked so unapproachably exotic on that first backstage visit. And he was still more than a little in love with her when he invited her to create for his company "The Magic of Katherine Dunham," a program of pieces that had not been seen for a quarter-century. Miss Dunham's dancers, who remained close to her and to one another throughout her life, swarmed into the studios to help her work with the young performers. Most of the Ailey dancers did not appreciate Miss Dunham's iron perfectionism or the unusual demands of her technique, a potent but challenging blend of Afro-Caribbean, ballet and modern dance. And she was not the easiest of women. I remember speaking with her before a public interview we were to do in April 1993. Addicted to CNN, she had just learned of the fiery, tragic end to the F.B.I.'s seige of the Branch Davidian compound in in Waco, Tex., that morning, and that was all that she could talk about, off and on the stage, despite her promises to discuss her work. Her horror was real, as was her sense of social justice. She has been criticized for not denouncing the Duvaliers for their dictatorship in Haiti, where she owned a home. But she had also sponsored a medical clinic in Port-au-Prince, and she stayed on for many years in desolate, impoverished East St. Louis, Ill., where she established a museum of artifacts pertaining to her career and taught local children including Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the Olympic long jumper, and the filmmakers Reginald and Warrington Hudlin. "I was trying to steer them into something more constructive than genocide," she said of the children in a 1991 interview with me in The New York Times. "Everyone needs, if not a culture hero, a culturally heroic society. There is nothing stronger in a man than the need to grow." That idealistic, eloquent self was infused with a streak of no-nonsense practicality. "I don't like that 'accept,' " MissDunham, still a vibrant beauty at 91, said during a Times interview six years ago in response to a middle-aged visitor who insisted on talking to her about the acceptance and embrace of old age. "I would just let the whole thing go. Just be there for it, centimeter by centimeter." Then it was time for the photo session. Her eyes seemed to widen even more invitingly and her gaze to grow even warmer as she looked into the eye of the camera and asked, "Did you ever see photographs of elderly divas trying to look sexy?" I love the brilliant colors and the skat syllables mixed in with the text. I read the book almost like it's beat poetry and try to get the kids to sing along with me using the skat syllables. It's a beautiful and touching story and although fiction, it still gets the point across for a preschooler and provides an introduction to the music of these jazz legends.J P DILLONRap A Tap TapHere's Bojangles - Think of Thatby Leo & Diane Dillon Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is probably one of the most well-known and well-loved tap dancers of all time. He was certainly one of the best. This story is short and simple and tells of the joy he brought to people's lives through dance. The repetition is perfect for preschoolers. I like to get the kids to stand up during this song and each time I read, "Rap a tap tap - think of that" the kids get to practice their own tap dance steps with you!J P RASCHKACharlie Parker Played Be Bopby Chris Raschka A fun and symbolically illustrated book, this is a favorite with the kids. They like the nonsense words and phrases. These words and sounds imitate what you'd hear the instruments doing when you listen to jazz. Charlie Parker was unchallenged as the greatest saxophonist of his time and he could make his horn sound like just about anything he wanted. During the middle part of the book, try having the kids repeat the sounds with you. If the children are old enough to read some words, have them help you with the ending by completing the sentences for you. Charlie Parker played... be bop!J P RASCHKAGiant Stepsby Chris Raschka John Coltrane's classic song "Giant Steps" is performed wonderfully in this book by raindrops, a snowflake, a box, and a kitten. Each representing a part of the song and bringing it together. How fun would it be to play the music for the children after the book is over and let them be the raindrops or the kitten?!J P SHANGE Ellington Was Not A Streetby Ntozake Shange Created from the author's poem "Mood Indigo," this picture book touches on the lives and contributions of a group of African American men in the 20th century. Among them are W.E.B. DuBois, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespe. Beautiful illustrations and text that is great for all ages. This book opens the door for your students to seek out more about the lives of these great men. Have photos or books about them handy, you might be surprised at the questions you'll be bombarded with. J 780.3 KRULLM Is For Musicby Kathleen KrullIllustrated by Stacy Innerst This book is filled with entertaining illustrations bringing everything from "Jj is for Jazz" to "Yy is for Yodeling Yankee Doodle" to life on the page. What I love best is that there isn't just one word for each letter. Every page contains several words & pictures illustrating the featured letter. You can get as involved as you want with each one depending on what age level and how much time you have at your disposal. At the very least, this book is sure to catch the attention of your class with its funky drawings and peak their interest in everything musical. *********************** LINKS: www.Mrwiggles.biz - Your Number 1 source for Hip Hop news, products and resources!!! **********************This is the single most amazing ballet I have ever seen, It is definitely worth the watch it will blow you away I promise! - From anonymous sender.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_CUhQP2lJ4&search=Buterfly%20Lovers ************************************ www.divinerhythmproductions.com EMPOWER YOUR SOLE!
