Good morning. Chicago Human Rhythm Project's annual festival of
American tap--the oldest and most comprehensive of its kind--July 27-
Aug. 9 at several venues in downtown Chicago. Week-long residencies
with tap masters, classes and workshops with a range of expert
instructor/performers and a series of performances, ranging from tap
slam competitions to a free concert in Millennium Park are among the
festival's activities.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s 19th Annual Festival Takes Place at
Jay Pritzker Pavilion,
Cultural Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, Fine Arts Building,
Roosevelt University
CHICAGO—The peak of summer in Chicago will offer the peak of tap
festivals when the Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP), the world’s
only year-round presenter of American tap dance and contemporary
percussive arts, presents Rhythm World, the oldest and most
comprehensive festival of American tap in the world. Now in its 19th
year of performance and education programs, Rhythm World takes place
July 27–August 9 throughout downtown Chicago, including the Jay
Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, the Fine Arts Building, Chicago
Cultural Center, Museum of Contemporary Art and Roosevelt University.
CHRP Founder and Director Lane Alexander returns to the
director’s seat after three years of guest direction by Jason
Samuels Smith, Dianne Walker and Derick Grant. As always, this
year’s Rhythm World will feature perennial favorites, including
Bessie Award winner Sam Weber and Broadway diva Dormeshia Sumbry-
Edwards, alongside new and emerging artists, including Jason Janus, a
principal of the Texas tap repertory company Tapestry, and Chloe
Arnold, founder and director of the Los Angeles Tap Fest.
Education Programs
Rhythm World begins July 27 with intensive residencies led by Sam
Weber and Derick Grant at the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan
Ave., and members of Step Afrika! at the Museum of Contemporary Art
(MCA), 220 E. Chicago Ave. Weber, a Bessie Award winner and former
Joffrey 2 member, is internationally recognized as one of the
greatest tap virtuosos of all time as well as a master choreographer
and master teacher. Grant was an original company member and dance
captain for Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk and recently toured
the country with his creation A Night Out: Tap!. Step Afrika!, based
in Washington, D.C., is the first professional company in the world
dedicated to the tradition of stepping, and they will make their full-
company Chicago debut on CHRP’s Global Rhythms program at the Harris
Theater in November 2009.
Courses, workshops and master classes take place August
3–9 at the Fine Arts Building and Roosevelt University, 430 S.
Michigan Ave. The highly respected faculty of master teachers, in
addition to Weber, Grant and members of Step Afrika!, includes CHRP
Director Lane Alexander, Chloe Arnold, Julie Cartier, Idella Reed
Davis, CHRP Associate Director Martin “Tre” Dumas, Ray Hesselink,
Jason Janas, Gene Medler, Billy Siegenfeld, Jason Samuels Smith,
Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Dianne “Lady Di” Walker and Mark Yonally.
Now in its eighth year, CHRP’s annual Youth Tap
Ensemble Conference (YTEC) takes place August 3–7 at the Fine Arts
Building. PrepTEC, a new component in this year’s YTEC, offers
younger members of the pre-professional repertory companies an
opportunity to benefit from the expertise available during Rhythm
World. More than 120 dancers between the ages of 12 and 19,
representing 14 youth tap ensembles from the U.S., China, Brazil,
Canada, Panama and other locations, will gather to study new
choreography, technique, improvisation and theatre-related topics.
YTEC participants will learn three new works by Jason Janus,
Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and Step Afrika! while the PrepTEC students
will learn an historical dance from Dianne Walker created by her
mentor, native Chicagoan Leon Collins.
An expanded Kids Program August 5–7 at the Fine Arts
Building offers intermediate tappers ages nine through 12 a
curriculum including oral and video histories, tap technique classes,
improvisation instruction and individual development of style and
expression.

Performances
CHRP kicks off a week of performances with its second annual free
performance featuring Rhythm World faculty, YTEC participants and
special guests Sunday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jay Pritzker
Pavilion in Millennium Park, as part of the City of Chicago’s summer
music and dance performance series. Chicago’s finest tap repertory
companies will perform, including CHRP’s ensemble BAM!, Jump Rhythm
Jazz Project, Jus’ LisTeN and Chicago Tap Theatre, as well as last
year’s smashing percussion/dance group, Be the Groove.
The week continues with a Tap Jam, a fun, free evening of
improvisation by Rhythm World participants Monday, August 3 at the
Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington. Tuesday, August 4 is a
double-header evening featuring the Tap Slam and the Cutting Contest
at 7:30 p.m. at Roosevelt University’s Ganz Hall, 430 S. Michigan
Ave., 7th floor. The Tap Slam puts the spotlight on 10 group or
individual Rhythm World participants competing for the Tap Slam entry
fees; the audience votes to determine the winner. The Cutting
Contest, an improvisation competition, pits 16 of the hottest young
tap dancers against each other in a foot-to-foot combat tournament. A
select panel of Rhythm World faculty members will judge the
competition and the winner will receive the Contest entry fees. A
student showcase performance takes place Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30
p.m., also at Ganz Hall. Admission to the August 4 and 5 evenings is
$5 each at the door or in advance at chicagotap.org.
Rhythm World culminates with CHRP’s annual performances, “JUBA!
Masters of Tap and Percussive Dance,” featuring a host of
extraordinary foot drummers on Thursday, August 6 and Saturday,
August 8 at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s MCA Stage, 220 E.
Chicago Ave. Thursday’s performance includes Emmy Award winner Jason
Samuels Smith, Broadway diva Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and renowned
choreographer Chloe Arnold, joined by CHRP Founder and Director Lane
Alexander and CHRP's ensemble BAM!. Saturday’s performance includes
the Ella Fitzgerald of American tap, Dianne “Lady Di” Walker,
alongside tap virtuoso and Bessie Award winner Sam Weber, wunderkind
Jason Janas and Chicago’s finest tap ensembles. Both performances
also feature guest artists from around the world and live music by
the Vijay Tellis-Nayak Trio. Single tickets are $30, $25 for Rhythm
World participants and MCA members.

Giving, a series of shared revenue, contemporary percussive arts

Dance in Millennium Park.

Founded in 1990, the Chicago Human Rhythm Project is America’s

Tap Into A Cure’s “THE AFRICA PROJECT” is back for another amazing year of classes and showcase. This will be our fourth year in the City of Champions, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
We have brought together another exciting year of tap dance, returning to us for a second year New York City’s amazingly talented Jason Samuels Smith, New York is also sending us the incredible Michela Marino - Lerman, Los Angeles California will be proudly represented with the unique talent of Christopher Broughton and the founder of THE AFRICA PROJECT and Tap Into A Cure, Edmonton’s own Andrew Merrigan. We have also included our hip hop friends again this year, as hip hop roots derive from tap dance we feel compelled to include this art form in our workshop. The Rock Steady Crew is sending us the very talented Ynot !
We have added an advisory board, the addition to our family are Bril Barrett, Steffan Clemente, Elka Samuels Smith and Jason Samuels Smith. Upon the advice of our board we have change our dates for the workshop and showcase, so please be aware that this year our showcase will be on a Saturday night and the workshop runs from Wednesday to Friday. We have also made our packages more affordable. There are three packages of tap dance for you to choose from ranging in prices of $80 to $240. And our Hip Hop classes are below $100.
Last year the world renown “Mr. Wiggles” Steffan Clemente joined us for 3 days of classes and made history on our stage with a battle of hip hop and tap between himself and Jason Samuels Smith. The jaw dropping performance was absolutely mesmerizing, and brought the house down! The Magical Rhythms Showcase will be back at a new location this year, but promises to be as jaw dropping as last year. Check our website for info coming real soon and some exciting additions to our showcase family! This year’s show will absolutely blow you away.
We need your support to help build the dream of building the Dr. Jeni LeGon Library and Music Room in Mukeu, Kenya. Hope we will see you in August, it will be so much fun, to much to miss!

Weekend, May 23-25, 2009 (National Tap Dance Day weekend).
This workshop will feature traditional choreography taught by the master
himself, a special honorary tap classes by Dr. Prince Spencer of the legendary
‘Four Step Brothers’, and Honorary Master Classes by leading tap artists.

Melba Huber, Ted Levy, Avi Miller, Logan Miller, Yukiko ‘Smilie’ Misumi, Lainie

The workshop will take place at Nola Studios in midtown Manhattan.

been featured on dozens of television shows including the Steve Harvey Show, the
Smothers Brothers, Sanford and Son, the Richard Pryor Show, and the Merv Griffin
Show where he appeared as a guest artist 32 times.
On Broadway he was featured performer in Eubie, Golden Boy, George M! and
Evolution of the Blues. Working with directors Francis Ford Cuppola, Nick Castle
and Richard Brooks he was featured in the movies The Cotton Club, Tap, and I'll
Do Anything. He has worked as an actor/singer/dancer in theatre such as the
Drury Lane in Chicago and the Sacramento Civic Light Opera. He has worked in
nightclubs on every continent from Australia and the Philippines to Europe,
England, Japan, South America, and of course the U.S. As a tap dancer and
teacher he has been featured at many jazz and tap festivals all over the U.S and
Israel.
Born in Chicago on April 24, 1936 Skip's first dance teacher/mentor was the
venerable Sadie Bruce. By the age of ten, he had already interacted on stage in
some of Chicago's top theatres with the great band leaders Noble Sissle and
Walter Dyett. As a child, he won almost every contest he was involved in and
this encouraged him to choose show business as a career.
After serving in the United States army, he joined the Billy Williams revue
which took him to Las Vegas and the Riviera Hotel and many other famous
nightclubs in the U.S. When night clubs were king, Skip honed his craft in the
best of them around the world.
He has shared the stage with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Pearl Bailey, Louis
Armstrong, Ray Charles, Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, Donald O'Connor, Joan
Crawford, Regis Philbin, Nat King Cole, Steve Harvey, Gregory Hines, Sammy Davis
Jr., Cab Calloway, Bill Cosby, Redd FoxX, Flip Wilson, The Four Tops, The
Temptations, Ed Sullivan, Francis Ford Coppola, and many more. He has worked
with many famous musicians: Clark Terry, Doc Severensen, Milt Hinton, Ray Brown,
James Moody, and many more. Interacting with these famous personalities shaped

Pan Asian Rep’s production NEW WORKS ’09 introduces a new facet into the
company’s repertoire: Monday Music Nights. Stellar veteran musicians, from
across the musical spectrum, will bring their craft to the intimate West End
Theater.
March 30 – Jazz pianist HELEN SUNG has been called “one of the brightest
emerging stars in jazz today.” Breaking stereotypes as an Asian-American jazz
pianist and composer, her experience in classical, jazz, & popular music gives
her a compelling, unique voice. Her CD Helenistique was praised as “…one of the
year’s most exciting listens.” (JazzTimes), and her latest CD Sungbird after
Albéniz, a jazz-classical adventure, is being hailed “a real winner” (All About
Jazz – Los Angeles), a “seamless recording in which one composer’s contributions
complement the other’s” (BillBoard). A graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute
of Jazz Performance, she has gone on to work with such masters as Clark Terry,
Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis, and Wayne Shorter; and with luminaries including
Steve Turre, T.S.Monk, and McArthur Fellow Regina Carter.
April 6 – Steel Pan Percussionist ANDY AKIHO is an award winning composer and
performer with a broad range of interests that stretch from steel pan to western
classical music. As a percussionist Akiho has performed with numerous
professional ensembles, and his immersion in various genres has given him a
unique approach to his primary instrument, the steel pan. Since 2003, he has
performed and taught steel pan extensively in New York City and has successfully
taught his arrangements to many groups including the Sesame Flyers International

Pan Asian Rep’s production NEW WORKS ’09 introduces a new facet into the
company’s repertoire: Monday Music Nights. Stellar veteran musicians, from
across the musical spectrum, will bring their craft to the intimate West End
Theater.
March 30 – Jazz pianist HELEN SUNG has been called “one of the brightest
emerging stars in jazz today.” Breaking stereotypes as an Asian-American jazz
pianist and composer, her experience in classical, jazz, & popular music gives
her a compelling, unique voice. Her CD Helenistique was praised as “…one of the
year’s most exciting listens.” (JazzTimes), and her latest CD Sungbird after
Albéniz, a jazz-classical adventure, is being hailed “a real winner” (All About
Jazz – Los Angeles), a “seamless recording in which one composer’s contributions
complement the other’s” (BillBoard). A graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute
of Jazz Performance, she has gone on to work with such masters as Clark Terry,
Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis, and Wayne Shorter; and with luminaries including
Steve Turre, T.S.Monk, and McArthur Fellow Regina Carter.
April 6 – Steel Pan Percussionist ANDY AKIHO is an award winning composer and
performer with a broad range of interests that stretch from steel pan to western
classical music. As a percussionist Akiho has performed with numerous
professional ensembles, and his immersion in various genres has given him a
unique approach to his primary instrument, the steel pan. Since 2003, he has
performed and taught steel pan extensively in New York City and has successfully
taught his arrangements to many groups including the Sesame Flyers International
Steel Orchestra. He has also had the opportunity to perform for Bill Clinton,

present the first Robin Dunn's F.A.C.E. (an acronym for

opportunity to learn, practice, and master useful
techniques to apply in performance and everyday life.

to experience firsthand the specialized process, and also
listen as special guest industry panelists provide

Workshop Series For the Performer in You!
(New York) January 8, 2009— E.D Entertainment returns to
The Ailey Extension after its first successful run to
present the first Robin Dunn's F.A.C.E. (an acronym for
Focus, Attitude, Confidence, Energy and Eye Contact)
workshop series for 2009. On Sundays from January 25th –
March 8th 4:30pm-7:30pm, participants will have the
opportunity to learn, practice, and master useful
techniques to apply in performance and everyday life.
Participants will also have the chance to perform in Robin
Dunn's F.A.C.E. showcase, which is open to the public, on
March 1, 2009. Audience members will have the opportunity
to experience firsthand the specialized process, and also
listen as special guest industry panelists provide
invaluable feedback to each performer. Past panelists have
included celebrity singer and vocal coach, Carole Sylvan,
casting director, John Doyle of Godlove & Company, Claudine
Joseph, the Vice President of Violator Management and
director choreographer, Ann Marie D'Angelo, in addition to
Robin Dunn.

Learn what you need to know to get it right the first time.
The Mind-Body Connection is for dancers who dance for fun,
or for a living. No matter what technique you try, this
workshop is valuable for anyone who wants make sure they
are 'picking up' choreography quickly and correctly. This
workshop is also great for professional actors and singers
who want to improve their performance during the dance
portions of auditions.
The first hour of this workshop will focus on conditioning
the body with a complete warm-up including jazz barre,
floor exercises for stretching and strengthening,
isolations and turning techniques. The second hour of the
workshop includes step patterns across the floor and small
combinations to practice the Mind-Body Connection methods
of picking up choreography. The second hour will cover
several methods, including counting, step rhythm and step
names. In the last hour of the workshop, Sue will teach
choreography with staging. Attendees will then rehearse and
perform the choreography within the workshop.

ABOUT SUE SAMUELS
Teacher, Choreographer and Performer, Sue Samuels has
established herself as a staple of the modern performing
arts community. Sue’s expertise from 35 years of experience
keeps her in demand as a mentor and coach by professional
and amateur artists from around the world. Her students
have included stars from stage and screen including Melba
Moore, Irene Cara and Brooke Shields.
Sue began her dance training with Broward Civic Ballet in
Florida where she performed with the Company for six years.
Sue's jazz training includes work with JoJo Smith, Frank
Hatchett and Michael Shawn. Her background in ballet and
jazz has influenced Sue's classical jazz style which
focuses on strong, proper body alignment and clean
technique. She is also the co-founder of Jo Jo's Dance
Factory (now known as Broadway Dance Center).
Sue's choreographic credits include telethons, theater
productions and commercials for Adidias, Members Only
and207
Up among others. She is currently on faculty at Broadway
Dance Center and The Ailey Extension.

COMMUNITY ALERT and A CALL TO ACTION:
LEGENDARY MULTI-CULTURAL DANCE SCHOOL CLOSING!
Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, the legendary New YorkCity
multi-ethnic
dance school and not-for-profit organization, closed its
doors on
December 31st 2008 after 15 years of "exceptional
contributions to our city",
(the council of NYC). Hit by the economic crisis -- with
fewer students
attending classes -- and a major rent increase, DDDC had no
other option
but to sadly shut down.
The immediate result is 55 teachers and drummers losing
their jobs.
Hundreds of children from lower income families losing the
opportunity to
receive free dance scholarships, along with thousands of
adult students
losing their community workout, a place to release stress
and convene
"Since its establishment, Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre-one
of New York
City's largest minority-owned cultural centers- has
dedicated itself to
connecting men and women of all ages and ethnicities
through the arts.
In a letter of June 2007, Mayor Bloomberg wrote, "As we
look back on the
incredible accomplishments of DDDC's 15 years, we also look
forward to
Even greater achievements on the horizon."
"I am confident that the New York community and government
officials,
who understand the profound impact that our philosophy and

COMMUNITY ALERT and A CALL TO ACTION:
LEGENDARY MULTI-CULTURAL DANCE SCHOOL CLOSING!
Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, the legendary New YorkCity
multi-ethnic
dance school and not-for-profit organization, closed its
doors on
December 31st 2008 after 15 years of "exceptional
contributions to our city",
(the council of NYC). Hit by the economic crisis -- with
fewer students
attending classes -- and a major rent increase, DDDC had no
other option
but to sadly shut down.
The immediate result is 55 teachers and drummers losing
their jobs.
Hundreds of children from lower income families losing the
opportunity to
receive free dance scholarships, along with thousands of
adult students
losing their community workout, a place to release stress
and convene
"Since its establishment, Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre-one
of New York
City's largest minority-owned cultural centers- has
dedicated itself to
connecting men and women of all ages and ethnicities
through the arts.
In a letter of June 2007, Mayor Bloomberg wrote, "As we
look back on the
incredible accomplishments of DDDC's 15 years, we also look
forward to
Even greater achievements on the horizon."
"I am confident that the New York community and government
officials,
who understand the profound impact that our philosophy and
ethnic dance

Announcing the Arts and Business Council's Multicultural
Arts Management Internship that matches 11 diverse
undergraduates with 11 NYC arts organizations to "learn the
business of the arts." Interns spend ten weeks (June
1-August 7) working on their host organization's projects
in areas such as marketing, fundraising, event planning,
community outreach, arts education, programming, research
and more.
Apply to be an intern host supervisor—you'll get a
significant management experience for yourself and an extra
brain for your organization.
To host an intern your organization must:
• be a nonprofit with at least two full-time staff;
• have offices within the five boroughs of New York
City;
• be a current member of Arts & Business Council of
New York (or become one);
• contribute $1,000 to your intern's stipend (that
works out to $2.50/hour on your part, such a deal);
• be able to provide an intern with a meaningful
project (i.e. not completely clerical).And this is what you
get:
• an bright, shiny undergraduate intern for 10 weeks
of full-time assistance;
• $1,500 grant from ABC/NY to contribute to the
intern's stipend;

VLA is proud to announce a new CLE law and film series. Our
new law and film series will focus on the study of ethics
through the prism of film and cinema. Attendees will be
mailed a DVD of the film along with reading material
two-weeks before the class. Registered participants will
then attend a two-hour class to discuss the film and
readings.
Topics covered will include:
Individual choice (self-interest) vs. collective
responsibility
Personal morality, professional roles, collegial pressures,
and economic incentives
Competing and unfixed ethical values
Ethical values vs. practical/situational pressures
Fairness, justice, honesty, loyalty, confidentiality, and
conflicts of interest
Recognition and resolution of ethical dilemmas
To launch our new law and film series, we begin with Joel
and Ethan Coen's film, based on Cormac McCarthy's 2005
novel, No Country for Old Men. No Country for Old Men
provides legal professionals with an abundance of ethical
problems and conflicts. Ethics, morals, principles and laws
are all seen in this film in literal and abstract
representations, allowing for both practical and
philosophical discussions as to how they may apply to
interpersonal relations and how at times certain choices
can produce unintended consequences.
All registered participants will be mailed a DVD of the
film along with reading material two-weeks before the
class, so please register by February 11th to guarantee
reception of materials. Registered participants will then
attend a two-hour class on February 24th to discuss the
film and readings.
This class will be taught by Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq.,
VLA's Director of Education. He has previously taught
critical theory, film, and visual culture at Hofstra
University, Harvard University, USC, and UC-Irvine.

Greetings Gates,
Where's Rusty? I'll tell you. I'm freezing my dancing feet off! I'm in New York from January 16-23 on a lecture tour.
Ron and Gio will make sure that the Lindy ByThe Sea classes are fun-filled and informative! Robert Vangor and the gang will make sure the Rhythm Club is the best possible. (I want to hear how packed the club was!)

If you are reading this and live around Albany, NY (or know someone who does), the schedule is below. I would love to see you.
Here's a brief description of what I'll be doing there: I'm on a lecture tour in and around Albany. I'll be giving fourteen one-hour talks on the history of American Jazz Dance (Cake Walk, Charleston, Tap, Lindy Hop), showing archival clips, demonstrating, and generally spreading the joy of dance to the masses. The talks are geared to small audiences in libraries and local community centers to ignite interest in an upcoming Jazz Dance festival at the big performing arts center in Albany, which is called The Egg. The great thing is they are providing me a driver! Yeah. I had originally thought they were going to give me a rental car, a map, and a GPS. So I am quite thrilled that I won't have to be driving in the freezing cold, and, most importantly, I will be dropped off at the door of each place!
So have a great time in my absence. Thank all the volunteers at the Rhythm Club when you're there, and be nice to Ron and Gio (well, to Ron, anyway - wink, wink).

Here's a brief description of what I'll be doing there: I'm on a lecture tour in and around Albany. I'll be giving fourteen one-hour talks on the history of American Jazz Dance (Cake Walk, Charleston, Tap, Lindy Hop), showing archival clips, demonstrating, and generally spreading the joy of dance to the masses. The talks are geared to small audiences in libraries and local community centers to ignite interest in an upcoming Jazz Dance festival at the big performing arts center in Albany, which is called The Egg. The great thing is they are providing me a driver! Yeah. I had originally thought they were going to give me a rental car, a map, and a GPS. So I am quite thrilled that I won't have to be driving in the freezing cold, and, most importantly, I will be dropped off at the door of each place!
So have a great time in my absence. Thank all the volunteers at the Rhythm Club when you're there, and be nice to Ron and Gio (well, to Ron, anyway - wink, wink).

Crazy Sexy Disco( New York , NY ) Wednesday, January 14, 2009—A new type of dance show emerges at a time where we can fall back in love with sequins, afros and disco balls. Crazy Sexy Disco has announced their eclectic performance gig at The Underwater Lounge at Water Street Restaurant in DUMBO, Brooklyn . Every third Thursday of the month from January through March, a new generation of fun-loving party-goers can experience this disco-liscous production starting at 9pm. Tickets are $20 and there's a two drink minimum.
The show is an hour and fifteen minute trip into the disco nightlife including interactive stories of love triangles, 70's classics and fond memories of 'the good life, as it was thirty years ago. Nine dancers, one vocalist and the MC (Jimbo Smiley) entertain audiences with an unforgettable night. (Did we mention there are roller-skates?)
The show appeals to the generations that lived through the disco era and warmly welcomes new audiences to this full-scale production.
Charging up the East Coast, Crazy Sexy Disco was booked for New Year's Eve at Boogie Nights, one of Atlantic City 's hottest nightclubs. Jen James made the comment, "The energy level was through the roof. Many disco devotees are already coming to see our NYC show. They're even planning to dress up in bell bottoms and fringed vests to get into the mood. DISCO is officially back!"
The show is produced, directed and choreographed by leading artists Jen James, Liz Piccoli and Svea Schneider. Together, their experience spans from the NYC Metropolitan Opera, Knicks City Dancers, MTV, Decadancetheatre and Pink and now lends itself to future off-Broadway spots.

Contracts are up soon, and we are seeking replacements to teach dance, voice, and acting to students from Kindergarten to adult and professionals. The emphasis is on elementary students at this time, with a few classes for high school, adults, and professionals.

Robin and her program received rave reviews. Robin Dunn has
worked with a number of recording artists throughout her
career, including Raven Symone, Missy Elliott, Heather
Headley and Sean Kingston. Currently, Robin Dunn is a
respected instructor at The Ailey Studios, The Ailey
School, Steps on Broadway and Hunter College. Robin is also
a teaching artist for Young Audiences in New York City and
continues to spread the art of Hip Hop dance through
education and performance.

Learn what you need to know to get it right the first time.
The Mind-Body Connection is for dancers who dance for fun,
or for a living. No matter what technique you try, this
workshop is valuable for anyone who wants make sure they
are 'picking up' choreography quickly and correctly. This
workshop is also great for professional actors and singers
who want to improve their performance during the dance
portions of auditions.
The first hour of this workshop will focus on conditioning
the body with a complete warm-up including jazz barre,
floor exercises for stretching and strengthening,
isolations and turning techniques. The second hour of the
workshop includes step patterns across the floor and small
combinations to practice the Mind-Body Connection methods
of picking up choreography. The second hour will cover
several methods, including counting, step rhythm and step
names. In the last hour of the workshop, Sue will teach
choreography with staging. Attendees will then rehearse and
perform the choreography within the workshop.

ABOUT SUE SAMUELS
Teacher, Choreographer and Performer, Sue Samuels has
established herself as a staple of the modern performing
arts community. Sue’s expertise from 35 years of experience
keeps her in demand as a mentor and coach by professional
and amateur artists from around the world. Her students
have included stars from stage and screen including Melba
Moore, Irene Cara and Brooke Shields.
Sue began her dance training with Broward Civic Ballet in
Florida where she performed with the Company for six years.
Sue's jazz training includes work with JoJo Smith, Frank
Hatchett and Michael Shawn. Her background in ballet and
jazz has influenced Sue's classical jazz style which
focuses on strong, proper body alignment and clean
technique. She is also the co-founder of Jo Jo's Dance
Factory (now known as Broadway Dance Center).
Sue's choreographic credits include telethons, theater
productions and commercials for Adidias, Members Only and 7
Up among others. She is currently on faculty at Broadway
Dance Center and The Ailey Extension.
