Originating from Calgary, Lisa La Touche is Founder and Artistic Director of M.A.D.D. Rhythms Canada. She teaches for the renowned Jazz company Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, and has been a featured choreographer in Dancers Studio West's "Alberta Dance Explosions" 2004 and 2005, guest choreographer with Vancouver's Urban Tap Squad, and Calgary's Encorps Dance Collective. She has even worked at the international level guest teaching for "New York City Dance School", and "Gluckerschule" both located in Stuttgart, Germany. Lisa's recent collaboration with Bril Barrett developing the Calgary based "M.A.D.D Rhythms Canada" has lead her to great new heights in her tap dance endeavors. She has successfully produced numerous tap productions in Calgary and recently just launched the 1st annual Calgary Tap Summit. Lisa works with many talented Canadian tap dancers working to achieve the goal of promoting and preserving the art of tap dance and bringing it to the next level.

Monday Night Tap Jams at DEBBIE ALLEN DANCE ACADEMY!

The monday night tap jams are starting again at DADA!!! There is an advanced tap class, taught by Josette Wiggan, and a jam follows. Class is from 7:30- 8:30 pm and the jam is right after starting at 8:30 pm.I'm also holding a tap class at my home studio tuesday nights , 8-9 pm and a jam afterwards.Also heads up! I'm starting a master class tap workshop series at DADA…I'll give more info about it as soon as everything is settled.

Students will work each morning learning and polishing a piece of tap repertory. The first morning of the program will begin with a placement class led by the choreographers. Students will be placed in one of three groups based on skill level. Each afternoon, after a supervised lunch-break, students will take special Master Classes in Bucket Drumming, Classic Tap, and Tap Films & History. The program ends on Tuesday evening with the Youth Showcase, when dancers perform their newly learned tap piece for family, faculty and fellow students.

Pre-Professional Program OUR 3RD HIT YEAR!
The Pre-Professional Program, July 7 - 11, is designed especially for advanced young adults (ages 14 - 19). Selected by audition, students will work intensively with either Michelle Dorrance or Derick K. Grant, two of tap's hottest and most innovative young choreographers. The all-inclusive program focuses on developing well-rounded tap skills in a professional environment that stresses self-discipline and excellence. Dancers will work each morning on the preparation of two new pieces of choreography that will be performed on Wednesday evening in the Tap Youth/Tap Future performances at the Duke on 42nd Street theater.

Full Circle presents: "Hip-hop to da Head"
In celebration of its tenth year anniversary, Full Circle presents "Hip-hop to da Head," a fusion of dance, song, rhyme and monologues emotionally driven by the multi-ethnic cast offering a unique palate of new and old school themes of urban theater. The work "...manages to educate and raise spirits sky high" - NY Times (4/10/06 Jennifer Dunning) and delivers a festival within the B.O.B. festival. Artistic Directors Kwikstep and Rokafella are street dance veterans who have built a worldwide reputation for straddling the two worlds of commercial and community hip-hop expression. As a husband and wife team they represent each side of the gender tug of war, yet as passionate dancers they prove that music is a universal language healing all wounds. In 1992, Kwikstep performed at P.S. 122 in the critically acclaimed "So What Happens Now?," considered to be the very first hip-hop theatre production. This April will mark the 15th anniversary of the return of Kwikstep to the P.S. 122 stage. Short film clippings will be shown to highlight his career by his street dance mentors and peers. Rokafella is widely known as among the pre-eminent B-Girlz in the world, and was recently a featured contributor to the first ever female break dance photo book by Martha Cooper entitled "We B *Girlz" published by powerHouse books. She is working on her docu-film of a six city tour of panel discussions entitled the "B Girl Sitdowns" - excerpts of which will also be screened during B.O.B.. All in the family: Starinah was raised in a tap-dancing family-- her mother and brother are both tap dancers. In fact, she began to tap at such a young age that neither she nor her family rememebers exactly when. Her brother, Jabowen, received an honorable mention in the DS Cover Model Search Contest.
Studying up: In addition to regularly taking hip-hop and African dance classes, Starinah teaches stepping and tap through MADD Rhythms at Chicago's South Shore Cultural Center and at Sand Creek Dance Centre in Chesterton, IN, as well as workshops at the company's annual Tap Summit.
On the big screen: Starinah was recently featured in the independent film The Rise and Fall of Miss Thang starring Dormeisha Sumbry-Edwards and Martin "Tre" Dumas III. (for more: missthangmovie.com)
Biggest fan: When Imagine Tap! played at Chicago's Harris Theater, Starinah saw the show nine times--that's more than twice a week during the show's 4 week run. "I was their professional audience screamer," she says.

NATIONAL DANCE WEEK- APRIL 20-29TH!
National Dance Week will be celebrated around the U.S. April 20-29, 2007. A variety of activities will be held locally. "We're expecting to bring some 600 kids city-wide from the Denver Public Schools for a day of exposure to virtually all forms of dance," says Gwen Bowen, National Dance Week
Representative of Colorado. "It meets with our goal of making dance accessible where it might not have been in the past." Gwen Bowen is artistic director for Arts For All, a non-profit group devoted to increasing the accessibility of all manner of artistic expression to all manner of people, young and old. She also serves as the Regional Director of National Dance Week.
COME DANCE and join Gwen to learn two dances for the NATIONAL DANCE WEEK
performances on Friday April 20 at noon at the Civic Center/City and
County Bldg., and on April 27 at South High School at 7pm We hope to
have close to 100 tap dancers as the finale of the show. Performing
will be students from public schools, private schools, private dance
studios and ethnic studios. This will be a complete gamut of dancers.

Denver, CO 80209, starting on March 24th at 1:00 and on all following

Institute, UNESCO, created International Dance Day to be celebrated
every year on the 29th April. The date commemorates the birthday of
Jean-Georges Noverre (1727 - 1810), the creator of modern ballet.
Every year a message from a well-known dance personality is circulated
throughout the world. The intention of International Dance Day and the
Message is to bring all Dance together on this occasion, to celebrate
this art form and revel in its universality, to cross all political,
cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together in peace and
friendship with a common language - DANCE.

-Ken Bell, a solo tap performer since age 8, worked with Don Johnson Orchestra, in night clubs, hotels, Disneyland, Academy Awards and Warner Brothers 50th Anniversary. He currently lives and teaches tap in Las Vegas.
- Ardie Bryant, Ambassador of Tap and a creator of modern jazz tap in 1947, worked with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole. A CSULA Professor of Jazz Tap and Tap History, Ardie was declared a Los Angeles Cultural Treasure in 2006.
-Pauline Hagino is a founding member of Rhapsody In Taps. She teaches at OrangeCoast College and the Defore Dance Studio and is a certified instructor in Pilates and Gyrokinesis.
-Christy Hernandez performed with RIT, Sam Weber and Dianne Walker, was the Artistic Director of Sound Effects, produced five Northern California Tap Workshops and currently teaches at the Academy of Performing Arts at Huntington Beach H.S.
-Joy Hewitt has performed, choreographed and taught in the US and Europe at Centre de Danse in Cannes for 6 years, UCLA, Loyola Marymount U., Chapman U. and CSULB. Former owner of Mission Viejo Dance & Performing Arts Center, Joy teaches at Santa Monica College.
-Gregg Russell, Emmy nominated choreographer, worked with Bette Midler, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, Cedric the Entertainer and his company, Tap Sounds Underground. He has directed TV commercials and was featured on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine.
-Linda SohI-Ellison, Artistic Director/Choreographer and soloist with Rhapsody In Taps for 25 years, has performed and taught worldwide. Linda is a Professor of Dance at Orange Coast College In Costa Mesa.
-Fred Strickler, former RIT soloist, dancer and choreographer for film, television,musical theater and the concert stage, has toured throughout the world. He is Professor of Dance at UC Riverside and performs as a tap soloist.
-Jim Taylor, 50 years professional tap dancer/teacher. Oversees Bob Fosse Scholarships. Assisted Fayard Nicholas at L.A. Tap Festival and teaches recreations of Fayard's choreography and works of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell.
-Chance Taylor has tapped since age 7 on stage, screen and TV. He teaches advanced rhythm tap in the US and Japan, performed in the film, TAP, featuring Gregory Hines and toured with Savion Glover in New York, Amsterdam and on the Regis Philbin Show.
-Steve Zee teaches tap on the faculty of CSU Long Beach, has been a member of RIT and Jazz Tap Ensemble. He directs his own company, L.A. Ironworks, and performs his one-man tap show "All In Good Time".

-Joy Hewitt has performed, choreographed and taught in the US and Europe at Centre de Danse in Cannes for 6 years, UCLA, Loyola Marymount U., Chapman U. and CSULB. Former owner of Mission Viejo Dance & Performing Arts Center, Joy teaches at Santa Monica College.
-Gregg Russell, Emmy nominated choreographer, worked with Bette Midler, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, Cedric the Entertainer and his company, Tap Sounds Underground. He has directed TV commercials and was featured on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine.
-Linda SohI-Ellison, Artistic Director/Choreographer and soloist with Rhapsody In Taps for 25 years, has performed and taught worldwide. Linda is a Professor of Dance at Orange Coast College In Costa Mesa.
-Fred Strickler, former RIT soloist, dancer and choreographer for film, television,musical theater and the concert stage, has toured throughout the world. He is Professor of Dance at UC Riverside and performs as a tap soloist.
-Jim Taylor, 50 years professional tap dancer/teacher. Oversees Bob Fosse Scholarships. Assisted Fayard Nicholas at L.A. Tap Festival and teaches recreations of Fayard's choreography and works of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell.
-Chance Taylor has tapped since age 7 on stage, screen and TV. He teaches advanced rhythm tap in the US and Japan, performed in the film, TAP, featuring Gregory Hines and toured with Savion Glover in New York, Amsterdam and on the Regis Philbin Show.
-Steve Zee teaches tap on the faculty of CSU Long Beach, has been a member of RIT and Jazz Tap Ensemble. He directs his own company, L.A. Ironworks, and performs his one-man tap show "All In Good Time".

The upcoming workshop in the 'Tradition In Tap - Series' will be dedicated to the work of the legendary Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer. The workshop is scheduled to take place in New York City on the weekend of National Tap Dance Day, Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28 2007.
This workshop will feature original choreography taught by the master himself, Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer, and Honorary Master Tap Classes by leading tap artists:
Ofer Ben, Ayodele Casel, Barbara Duffy, Melba Huber, Avi Miller, Andrew Nemr, Prof. Robert L. Reed, Sarah Reich, Germaine Salsberg, Jason Samuels-Smith, Randy Skinner, Prof. Hank Smith & Shea Sullivan.
The workshop is sponsored in part by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs & Dance Spirit / Dance Teacher Magazines, and will take place at Nola Studios in midtown Manhattan.
The Participants Showcase will take place on Saturday May 26, at Peter Norton Symphony Space - Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater (on Broadway). See the website for guidelines and an application form.

Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer - bio:
Born in New York City, Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer began his career as a tap dancer on roller skates at the Hudson Guild in the Chelsea district of Hell's Kitchen. His twin sister (Hattie) expressed little or no desire to join Harold in his theatrical endeavors.
His family moved to Harlem in the early 1960's where he continued his education in reading, writing, arithmetic and rhythm tap. He performed at night in Julie Podell's Kit Kat Club on East 55th Street, and attended Cooper Junior High School by day.
Mr. Cromer tossed away his roller skates when Cole Porter and B. G. De Sylva signed him to appear on Broadway in 'Du Barry Was A Lady', with Bert Lahr, Ethel Merman and Betty Grable. Miss Merman sang 'Do I Love You', and Harold danced.
Following the long run, Miss Merman was to star in 'Panama Hattie' and was later replaced by Gypsy Rose Lee as Madame 'Du Barry'. Once again, Gypsy sang and Harold Danced.Following a long road tour, Harold returned to Broadway in Richard Kollmar's production of 'Early To Bed', with music by Fats Waller, book and lyrics by George Marion Jr., starring Carl Brisson and Muriel Angelus at the Broadhurst Theater in 1943.
Harold is certainly no stranger to Vaudeville, night clubs, movies and television, as a member of the well known song and dance comedy team of 'Stump and Stumpy' with James Cross. They appeared in the leading theaters and night clubs throughout the United States in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as in Canada and Europe. To mention a few: The Cotton Club, Copacabana, The Riviera - with Duke Ellington, The Desert Inn - with Ted Lewis in Las Vegas and Hollywood, The Paramount - with Frank Sinatra, The Strand Theater - with Billie Holiday and Count Basie, toured with Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, The Ink Spots, Stan Kenton, Sophie Tucker and many other well known celebrities.
Harold kept apace with the changing times when he became the Master of Ceremonies to Rock & Roll's 'The Biggest Show of Stars' in the late 1950's, introducing Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Paul Anka, Buddy Darin, Fats Domino, Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Chuck Berry and Cliff Richards(England's challenge to Elvis Presley), Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
Mr. Cromer returned to Broadway in 1978 in Lee Theodore's 'The American Dance Machine' as a guest soloist and on tour to many cities in the U.S.A. and Japan. More recently, he concluded a successful engagement in London, England at the Adelphi Theater in 1982.
Harold received his Living Treasure in American Dance Award in 1996. It was presented to him on behalf of the School of American Dance & Arts Management by Oklahoma City University graduate, and now Tony Award winner, Kristin Chenoweth.
For the past fifty years Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer has performed as a song-and-dance man and impressionist in the United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland, Austria, Italy, Japan, Cuba and Mexico and on special occasions as a roller skating tap dancer.

July 17-28th 2007
MPAC cultivates and educates young dancers interested in pursuing a career in entertainment. The twelve-day MPAC experience culminates with the performance of a mini-Broadway musical, written and directed by Europe Harmon.
MPAC participants receive:
-Classes in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip-hop, musical theater, stretch, voice, and acting taught by some of the nation's finest instructors, choreographers and performers.
-Specialized Performance Workshops
-Broadway show and talk-back with cast members
-Seminars with well-known Broadway and television artists

Applicants must audition via videotape (VHS, mini DV, DVD, e-mail video) which must include:
-Name & Age stated clearly at the beginning of the videotape
-A jazz or lyrical combination & a tap combination no less than one minute long.
-A vocal selection that is age appropriate.
-Recitation of a fable or poem
*Applicants must be 14-21 years of age
*Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult chaperone
*Tuition is $1025.00 for the 12 day intensive.
*Deadline June 1st.

In this Joyce Theater performance, he and his troupe, Urban Tap, perform a blend of tap, freestyle, and traditional dance with master drumming from Haiti and Guadeloupe.

Beginning July 10, Lincoln Center Festival will present Slow Dancing, an outdoor installation of larger-than-life, hyper-slow-motion video portraits of extraordinary dancers and choreographers from around the world, conceived and directed by artist David Michalek. The installation will be seen on three five-story screens hung on the front facade of the New York State Theater on Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza. With Slow Dancing, Mr. Michalek attempts to simultaneously capture the beauty of the body in motion, while laying bare its most intricate workings. Slow Dancing will run from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., from July 10 through July 29.
Each subject's movement (approximately 5 seconds long) was shot on a specially constructed set using a high-speed, high-definition camera recording at 1,000 frames per second. The result is approximately 10-minutes of extreme slow motiona motion portrait in which each dancers unique artistic expression and technique are revealed as never before.
For the Plaza installation, a cycle begins as a full-length figure of a dancer appears on each of the three screens. Over the next 10 minutes, what at first appears to be a series of "still" photographs unfolds, gesture by barely-perceptible gesture, into an elaborate choreography. Viewers can choose to focus on one dancer's complete performance or observe the interplay among the three screens. The extreme slow motion also allows the viewer to share privileged information about the complexity of the simplest gestures; catching details that would normally escape the naked eye.
The subjects chosen for Slow Dancing are some of today's foremost modern and classical dancers and choreographers, as well as recognized master interpreters of a range of traditional and contemporary dance forms. The dancers represent a diversity of body types, sizes, training, styles, traditions, ages and ethnicities. They hail from the worlds of ballet (Herman Cornejo, William Forsythe, Isabelle Guerin, Allegra Kent, Alexei Ratmansky, Wendy Whelan); modern dance (Karole Armitage, Trisha Brown, Holley Farmer, Bill T. Jones, Desmond Richardson, Shen Wei); tap (Roxanne Butterfly), and from many countries, including the United States, Russia, Guinea, Bali, China, Turkey, Brazil, India, Taiwan and New Zealand. And they represent dance traditions and contemporary styles as diverse as Javanese court dance (Miroto Martinius), Krumping (Lil C), "Voguing" (Benny Ninja), Afro-Brazilian Capoeira (Maestre Joao Grande), Hip-Hop (Kwikstep and Rokafella), Shantala Shivalingappa (Indian Kuchipuri), Beijing Opera (Wu Hsing-Kuo) and Flamenco (Omarya Amaya).

David Michalek is an artist who takes the concept and techniques of portraiture as the starting points for the creation of compelling works, on both a large and small-scale, in a range of mediums. His focus over the past ten years has been closely tied to his interest in relational aestheticsspecifically using performative and interactive techniquesstorytelling, dialogue, movementrelying on the input and responses of otherssubjects, collaborators and audienceas integral to both the creation and the experience of art. He has been drawn in particular to projects that bring together diverse groups of people in settings ranging from galleries to public spaces, churches and community organizations to health-care facilities. His 14 Stations is one such project, created in collaboration with men and women transitioning out of homelessness, participating in the Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. 14 Stations is modeled on the traditional Christian devotional rite, The Stations of the Cross, with a different man or woman assuming the role of the Christ figure in each. Group interaction, discussion, and communal meals were all part of the process. Michalek's riveting, oversized black-and-white photos, mounted on back-lit displays have not only been exhibited in galleries and museums, but have served as the catalyst for interactive performance events in a number of cities, involving the homeless and formerly homeless interacting with the audience and participating in a performance of Bach piano works that incorporates projected stills of 14 Stations. Covering the 2005 exhibit of 14 Stations at The Brooklyn Museum, Art in America said, "Michalek's commiseration with his fellow humans and deep understanding of dramatic figurative representation have enabled him to produce a profound cycle of photographs."
Commissioned to create the images for the film in Peter Sellar's Kafka Fragments, a staged setting of composer Gyorgy Kurtag's searing work for soprano and violin, Michalek, then Artist-in-Residence at The Bridge, Inc., a day-home for people living with mental illness, drew on his activities and interactions with patients to create his compelling photographs. Michalek introduced Kurtag's libretto at the residents' weekly poetry group, where it was read aloud and discussed. Out of these discussions, and over four months of work, he and the group staged and photographed scenes and tableaux for each of the 40 "fragments" of text that are sung by soprano Dawn Upshaw. The Los Angles Times, reviewing the 2005 performance of Kafka Fragments at Zankel Hall, wrote, "Kafka Fragments reveals the hidden places where light shines within the darkest recesses of our souls...[and the] photographs by David Michalek connect the musical fragments to suffering in the world and also to the beauty of the world."
Born in San Francisco in 1967, David Michalek earned a B.A. in English Literature from U.C.L.A. in 1990 and also studied filmmaking at NYU. He worked as an assistant to noted photographer Herb Ritts for two years, beginning in 1989. In 1991, he began his professional photographic career and worked regularly as a portrait artist for publications such as The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Interview, and Vogue. Beginning in the mid-1990s, Michalek began experimenting with performance and installation, and developing large-scale, multi-dimensional projects. His solo and collaborative work has been shown nationally and internationally, with recent solo exhibitions at Yale University, The Brooklyn Museum, and The Kitchen. He has collaborated with director Peter Sellars on two staged works: Kafka Fragments, presented as part of Carnegie Hall's 2005-06 season; and St. Franois d' Assise, presented at the Salzburg Festival and Paris Opera. Other film and video work for theater includes collaborations with The Tallis Scholars; John Malpede and L.A.P.D. on three works, Agents and Assets, The Skid Row Museum and RFK in EKY; and with the Brooklyn Philharmonic in a project for The Brooklyn Museum's "Music Off the Walls" series. Michalek has been the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, from, among others, The Franklin Furnace, The Durfee Foundation, The California State Arts Council, the Jerome Robbins Foundation, Karen-Weiss Foundation, and the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County (commission grant toward the creation of Slow Dancing). Beginning in spring 2007, he will be an artist in residence with The World Performance Project at Yale University. He is on the visiting faculty of the Yale Divinity School, where he lectures on religion and the arts. David Michalek lives in New York with his wife Wendy Whelan, principal dancer of New York City Ballet.

Orland Park kicked up its heels last Saturday and danced all night.Well, for two hours anyway. Tap, hip-hop, ballet, modern, jazz, Spanish ballroom flashed across thestage as Best of Dance Chicago returned for its fourth year in a row.With enthusiastic support from villagers and elected officials, theOrland Park Arts Commission, under the leadership of Colleen Panega,packed the Sandburg High School Performing Arts Center for the danceconcert featuring top companies from throughout the region.Hip Hop ConnXion, a young troupe featured in a 2006 Firstlook feature,opened the show with enough energy to power the stage lights.Hip-hoppers popped, froze and kept their bodies rhythmically following the complex choreography by Suave. Audience intensity was high when HipHop ConnXion left the stage.Those who developed the art of tap dancing over the decades would havebeen ecstatic to see the next act, a cappella dance performance by thephenomenal Chicago Tap Theatre.Chicago Ballet company members danced on pointe to a drivinginstrumental version of the Beatles "Revolution" by Kronos Quartet. Although this reviewer did not care for the music, the choreography andits execution were compelling.One hardly thinks of park districts and high schools when professionaldance is involved but the award-winning Bolingbrook Park DistrictDanceforce, as well as Sandburg's own Orchesis Dance Troupe, broughtyouthful bravado and talent to the stage. Everyone of these youngdancers should go forward in performance arts.Live music by Stone has to be seen and heard to be believed. This guyplays several instruments at once -- with tremendous coordination andmusical talent.The elegant, exotic SurTaal Dance Company, Stick and Move Dance Crew,Choreography by Eddy Ocampo, Cerqua Riveral Dance Theatre, CultureShock Chicago, Chicago Latin & Ballroom Dance, Bril with M.A.D.D.Rhythms and Inaside Chicago Dance kept the show moving with charisma,electricity and huge amounts of talent and hard work. Hopefully 2008 will find Best of Dance Chicago back in town for anotherstellar show.
